The Operation Opera Announces Christmas Spectacular

The Operation Opera Christmas Spectacular will be presented at the National Opera Center on December 10, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. by non-profit theatre company Rabbit Hole Theatricks, Inc. This production marks a return to the National Opera Center for Operation Opera, which played at Lincoln Center and then went on to make its orchestral debut with the Garden State Philharmonic.

Surflight is thrilled to be presenting Disney's Newsies, the third show in the exciting 2017 season. Newly reopened for 2017 Surflight has been overjoyed with the overwhelming response and tickets sales for its first two shows Footloose and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as well as its Children's Theatre series and Show Place old fashioned performing ice cream parlour. Surflight's production of Newsies , directed and Choreographed by Paula Hammons Sloan, Assistant Choreographer Liz Troxler and Musical Direction by Michael McAssey, will be the New Jersey Regional premiere.

We've had a couple of challenging days, but we've also witnessed some breakthroughs among the cast. Acting is difficult, especially for students used to vocations in which there is one correct answer. It's easy to tell people they are singing the wrong notes; it's harder to tell them their intent isn't showing and expect them to fix it. It's also hard to remain alert and in character for nine hours on the eighth consecutive day of rehearsal.

Last year, the American International School of Guangzhou converted an on-campus warehouse into a gorgeous 497-seat theatre. It still smells of fresh wood and polish. Yesterday we moved from the dance studio into the theatre for the remainder of our rehearsals.

'Footloose' follows a Chicago teen, Ren McCormack, who recently moved to a small town where dancing and rock music have been banned. As he struggles to fit in, he also fights to change the minds of the conservative Reverend Shaw Moore and the entire town. The music is written by Tom Snow with lyrics by Dean Pitchford and additional lyrics by Kenny Loggins. The book is by Pitchford and Walter Bobbie.

Two days after Typhoon Merbok descended on Guangdong province, three theatre professionals from New York descended on the American International School of Guangzhou to begin a ten-day intensive program for twenty-nine students from the fourth to the twelfth grade. In our first three days, we cast each participant and taught all the music and half the staging and choreography for our hour-long show. Much like the rain, our pace was strong and driving, and much like the ninety-degree temperatures, our energy was high and sweat-inducing.
