Before the clones attacked, before the Na'vi Hometree was destroyed, before Buzz Lightyear went to infinity and beyond, avant-garde film and video pioneers were expanding the bounds of the moving image by harnessing computer technology to create radical new ways of seeing. Museum of the Moving Image will present a weekend program devoted to exploring early works of computer animation, organized by guest curators Leo Goldsmith and Gregory Zinman. This series of screenings and conversations, Computer Age: Early Computer Movies, 1952-1987, will take place today, November 15 through 17, 2013. Screenings include avant-garde works ranging from oscilloscope experiments to computer-assisted psychedelia; formative digital advertising and music videos; as well as feature films that incorporated these techniques into the mainstream.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in partnership with New York University and the Orphan Film Symposium, will present 'The Real Indies: A Close Look at Orphan Films,' a two-day screening series on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. The series, honoring orphan films - rarely- seen, previously neglected works deserving preservation and revival - will open on Friday at 8 p.m. with the West Coast premiere of the restoration of 'Portrait of Jason,' the groundbreaking 1967 documentary feature about a gay African American by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Shirley Clarke.

The colorful, graphically complex original paintings created for iconic movie advertising campaigns will hang alongside the final one-sheets for such films as 'My Fair Lady,' 'Camelot,' 'Superman,' 'Star Trek - The Motion Picture' and 'Apocalypse Now' in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' new exhibition, 'Bob Peak: Creating the Modern Movie Poster.' Opening to the public on Thursday, January 20, in the Academy's Fourth Floor Gallery, the exhibition will run through April 17. Admission is free.
