The term “fairy” either conjures up a vision of a well-loved, winged, Tinkerbell-like, character or an unspoken derogatory term for a man from the gay community.  There is no middle ground.  It is black or white.  But in the 1980's times were different. Perhaps some people even took ownership of the title.  This was a time when the words “gay” and “father” were never used together, and a time when no one yet knew if that might, someday, become possible.

Buran Theatre's inaugural CartHorse Fellow Cara Scarmack will see her play some higher glimmer in the landscape of flat premiere as a culmination of the fellowship. Under the direction of Sarah Hughes, the immersive and genre-defying work-straddling theatre, dance and music-will see a three-week run at The Collapsable Hole in the West Village from October 20-November 3.

Japan Society presents a staged reading of Manhood by Japanese playwright Hideto Iwai, led by director Sarah Hughes, taking place Monday, March 26 at 7:30 PM at Japan Society (333 East 47th Street). Manhood marks the 13th installment of the Society's Play Reading Series of contemporary Japanese plays in English translation, introducing topical plays from up-and-coming playwrights in Japan to artists and audiences in the U.S. This event, part of Japan Society's 110th Anniversary Season, aligns with the Spring 2018 Performing Arts focus on deepening the Society's relationship with New York artists.

WP Theater Announced as Winner of Bold Theater Women's Leadership Circle Grant; Adds Tamillla Woodard & Rachel Karpf to Their Team

Northern Stage announced today that WP Theater (formerly Women's Project Theater) is among the five winners of an unprecedented new grant to support women artistic directors in professional theaters across the United States. The BOLD Theater Women's Leadership Circle, led by Carol Dunne, Producing Artistic Director of Northern Stage, will provide $1.25 million of support for Northern Stage and four other theaters run by female artistic directors during the 2018-2019 season. Each theater will receive a $250,000 grant.
