eighth blackbird to Perform at Zankel Hall in January

On Monday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall presents three-time Grammy Award-winning instrumental sextet eighth blackbird performing the New York premiere of Hand Eye by the composers' collective Sleeping Giant. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016, eighth blackbird was recently nominated for its fourth Grammy Award for the ensemble's latest recording Filament. The group's new project, Hand Eye, was co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall for its 125 Commissions Project, in which at least 125 new works will be commissioned over the next five seasons in celebration of the Hall's 125th anniversary.

Talking Band's New Play Set for La MaMa in 2016

Since its founding in 1974 by Paul Zimet, Ellen Maddow and Tina Shepard-former members of Joseph Chaikin's seminal Open Theater-the Talking Band has remained a cornerstone of New York City's avant-garde theater community. Ben Brantley of The New York Times recently called them 'one of the boldest and most venerable politically minded companies in New York experimental theater.' American Theater magazine has deemed them 'one of the most exceptional theater companies in the country.' The Talking Band will present in association with La MaMa the world premiere of its latest work, Burnished by Grief, a sinister, music infused romantic comedy, at La MaMa'sfirst floor theater from January 22-February 7.

To celebrate eighth blackbird's Grammy nomination for Filament, the group has released 'Pretty Polly,' a short animated film by Nathaniel Murphy, which uses Pretty Polly from Bryce Dessner's Murder Ballades (from Filament) as its soundtrack. In the murder ballad tradition, the music and film tell the macabre tale of a 'melancholy' sailor who murders his young wife. Watch the short below!

WNO's season continues with the world premiere of the newly revised version of Appomattox, the first opera WNO has presented by the iconic American composer Philip Glass, with a libretto by the Academy Award-winning writer Christopher Hampton, November 14-22 in the Opera House. In the first act, we eavesdrop on history as the Civil War comes to its final resolution at the courthouse in Appomattox. Then, in the newly composed second act, we fast- forward 100 years to the time of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as the struggle for civil rights continues.  BroadwayWorld has a first look below!
