TAMAR OF THE RIVER Begins Tonight Off-Broadway

Jeremy Greenbaum (The Fantasticks) and Aaron Komo complete the cast of Prospect Theater Company's upcoming world premiere production of TAMAR OF THE RIVER, a new music theater work with music and book by Marisa Michelson, book and lyrics by Joshua H. Cohen and direction by Daniel Goldstein (Godspell). Previously announced cast members include Margo Seibert (set to make her Broadway debut as 'Adrian' in ROCKY on Broadway in Spring 2014) as Tamar, with Ako (Throne of Blood), Erik Lochtefeld (February House), Mike Longo (Hair) and Vince B. Vincent (Geography of Loss), and Jen Anaya, Adam Bashian, Margot Bassett, Troy Burton, Tamrin Goldberg and Mary Kate Morrissey.

Music Box Theatre welcomes the filmmakers and local stars of the new '80s-set comedy Computer Chess for the film's opening weekend in Chicago. Writer-director Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha), local stars Gordon Kindlmann and Anne Dodge, Chicago-born producer Alex Lipschultz and pioneering chess programmer David Slate will conduct post-show discussions on Friday and Saturday. Ray Pride, film editor of Newcity, facilitates post-screening Q&As Friday andSaturday, Sept 27 and 28, 7:15 p.m. at Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport.
Jazz Legend Benny Goodman to be Celebrated in Chicago

The Music Institute of Chicago's fourth annual jazz festival celebrates the enduring legacy of Chicago's own Benny Goodman, featuring two concerts and the film The Benny Goodman Story November 1 and 2 at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston. This two-day event shines a spotlight on the King of Swing, who first learned to play the clarinet at Chicago's famed Hull House.

Music Director Marin Alsop will lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture on Friday, September 20 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 22 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, andSaturday, September 21 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore. Also on the program is the United States' premiere of the BSO co-commission of John Adams' Saxophone Concerto, performed by Tim McAllister. Gee's Bend by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder and directed by Thomas W. Jones II, music directed by William Hubbard and William Knowles will be in performance at MetroStage tonight, Sept. 12-Nov. 3. Gee's Bend tells the true story of the Pettway family in Gee's Bend, Alabama, as they live through segregation, the Civil Rights Movement and become famous for their iconic quilts. All of this is told with a backdrop of soul-stirring music in the gospel tradition that the Gee's Bend women sang as they quilted.
