Tenor Carl Tanner is in San Diego to sing Radames, the lead male role in Verdi's Aida, a role he's already sung 145 times before. We met to discuss his background and career just before he was due at a rehearsal. Tanner's is the most unlikely tenor in the history of opera.

The original play is a masterwork by Mishima Yukio, which premiered November 27, 1956, at Dai-ichi Seimei Hall in a production commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Bungakuza theatre company.

The season finale will be the season's sole new work. The NNTT commissioned playwright Horai Ryuta to write the script, and has asked Suzuki Yumi to direct.
