The comics given the job of making the Friars laugh last night were not fooling around and the club rocked with laughter. The stand up comedy of MC Dave Konig, George Vanarthos, Michelle Tod, Nancy Lombardo, Michele Balan, Maria Schultz, Ross Bennett and producer Cory Kahaney were well received by members who have been well trained in the art of laughing by fellow Friars. Ross Bennett, recently a smash on David Letterman was especially effective. The intimate setting of the club's Milton Berle Room has been the scene of many fun filled evenings, and numerous comics have launched their careers in the mahogany walled space.

This film by Erik Greenberg Anjou celebrates 160 years of tradition and great stories by the Jewish Deli owners, operators and fanatics who are keeping the lox sliced thin and the Pastrami hot in the Jewish delicatessens that are still thriving around the world. Besides the food, Ziggy Gruber, operator of Kenny and Ziggy's in Houston, Texas is the star of this funny and heartwarming documentary. The film reflects the heart of a vital ethnic history. It's also a love story, not just about the food, but about the preservation of family, laughter and community that remains a fundamental part of a trip to a Jewish Delicatessen. What better place to see the wonderful film than the Friars Club were those traditions are celebrated every day. After the talk back with Ziggy Gruber, Fyvesh Finkel and Erik Greenberg Anjou, maitre d' Giuseppe Tarillo welcomed everyone into the Frank Sinatra Dinning Room. I guess that's what you call Jewish Fusion. It's great "having what the Friars were having".

I don't think that there has ever been a person that has been in the Friars club who has not shared a laugh or left the Monastery not smiling. That in itself is a huge accomplishment, but the Friars do so much more than entertain themselves and enjoy their camaraderie. The Friars Club's Sunshine Committee (Tom DeBow chairman) is to the Friars Club what Ronald McDonald House is to McDonald's-they bring a ray of sunshine to those who need it most!

Frank Military the legendary music publisher whose imprint was on many of the hit songs over the last 45 years was memorialized by his son at the Friars Club yesterday. It was an emotional afternoon as many of the icons of the music world attended.
