Last week the National YoungArts Foundation took over Manhattan offering approximately 120 aspiring artists (actors, dancers, designers, cinematagraphers, musicians, photographers, singers, visual artists and writers, all ages 15 - 18) the life changing opportunity to participate in more than 50 master classes, as well as studio visits, workshops and tours. Today, April 29 is International Dance Day and to celebrate, Canadian dance icon Peggy Baker presents figures in motion - part lecture, part slide show - free for the public at the Betty Oliphant Theatre at 7:15pm. figures in motion is presented just prior to a performance of her first-ever full evening ensemble work, locus plot, which runs April 24-May 3 at the same location. In honour of International Dance Day, today's performance of locus plot will be pay-what-you-can at the door.

?The Celebrity Series of Boston announced its 2015-2016 season today, marking 77 years of bringing the world's greatest performing artists to Boston. The season opens on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 with author and speaker David Sedaris. In total, the 2015-2016 season will include 48 music, dance and entertainment engagements. The 2015-16 season is sponsored by Amy and Joshua Boger.

Choreographer Liz Gerring to Receive $25,000 Jacob's Pillow Dance Award

This year's Jacob's Pillow Dance Award, a prestigious honor carrying an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize, will be presented to contemporary choreographer Liz Gerring in recognition of her talent and outstanding contributions to the dance field. Active in the dance world for nearly 20 years, Gerring regularly garners acclaim for her 'enthralling and important' works (Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times) that also 'reveals the dancers as the splendid athletes that they are' (dance critic Deborah Jowitt). Gerring will accept the Award and members of Liz Gerring Dance Company will perform at the Pillow's Season Opening Gala on Saturday, June 20 in the Ted Shawn Theatre. The company will return to perform the evening-length work glacier in the Doris Duke Theatre August 19-23. Previous recipients of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award include tap artist Michelle Dorrance, the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham, 2013 MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham, and Tony Award winner and director of New York Live Arts Bill T. Jones, among others.

Ric Burns' new documentary American Masters -- American Ballet Theatre: A History premieres nationwide Friday, May 15, 9-10:30 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) in honor of the ballet company's 75th anniversary. On Thursday, May 28 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore, and Friday, May 29 at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 30 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 31 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, audiences will hear some of the most popular and recognizable film scores in cinematic history including music from Superman, Home Alone, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harry Potter, Schindler's List, Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan and E.T. The new Broadway musical An American in Paris is now in previews and just opened last night, April 12, 2015 at the Palace Theatre (Broadway at 47th Street). An American In Paris is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. Inspired by the Academy-Award winning film, An American In Paris brings this classic tale to Broadway for the first time with music and lyrics by George Gershwinand Ira Gershwin and a book by Tony nominee and Pulitzer Prize finalist Craig Lucas.
