Why Julia Roberts Turned Down THE NORMAL HEART Twice Before Saying Yes
by Nicole Rosky
- Apr 21, 2014
HBO will soon release it's highly anticipated film version of The Normal Heart, and according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, securing Jula Roberts as 'Dr. Brookner' wasn't an easy feat. Roberts reportedly turned down the role twice because she 'only saw the character's hostility and rage.' When director Ryan Murphy presented her with this version of the film, she thought: 'This is getting ridiculous. I need to pay attention to why this keeps coming back to me. I suddenly understood who she was in terms of this scary, inexplicable plague-what originally seemed [to me] to be anger was actually her determined pursuit to be part of a solution that she wasn't part of with the first plague that she experienced. Everything fell into place for me after that. I could see these are just really scared people who won't give up on finding the answers.'

freeFall Theatre Presents THE NORMAL HEART, Now thru 2/16
by BWW News Desk
- Jan 25, 2014
Larry Kramer's unabashed indictment of the politics surrounding the early days of the AIDS epidemic debuted in 1985 and is no less surprising or powerful almost 30 years later. Set in New York City, The Normal Heart unfolds like a real-life political thriller as Ned Weeks and a close-knit group of friends shout into the darkness about what they see happening to their friends and community. Their warnings erupt into all-out fury as everyone from government leaders, healthcare providers and the mainstream media ignore the mounting crisis. The Normal Heart was revived on Broadway in 2011 for a limited, sold-out run. It won three Tony Awards and has been made into an HBO motion picture starring Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo. This deeply moving play is part of freeFall's SEASON OF OUTCASTS, and plays through February 16.
