BWW Reviews: LISA FISCHER Traverses Diverse Emotional Terrain in Exquisite Yet Meandering Show at Birdland
by Remy Block - Apr 29, 2015

It wasn't so much watching a performance as it was bearing witness to an interior exploration, the chrysalis-busting conjuring of an artist stepping out of the shadows to claim her own territory. Lisa Fischer, the extraordinarily gifted vocalist featured in the 2014 Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, took the stage at Birdland for a run of shows from April 24-27. She was joined on stage by the band Grand Baton, led by musical director and arranger JC Maillard, filled out by Aidan Carroll on upright bass and Thierry Arpino on drums. Maillard, sporting blond dreads reminiscent of Lisa Bonet circa Lenny Kravitz, mostly played his custom made Sazbass, but also picked up the electric guitar and played keys. The set consisted of eight songs, including encore, but the arrangements were elastic, allowing each song to stretch into jams, riffs and solos, traversing diverse emotional and sonic terrain.

Billy Childs Opens Segerstrom Center's 2014-15 Jazz Season Tonight
by BWW News Desk - Oct 17, 2014

When composer/arranger/pianist Billy Childs was introduced to the music of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter Laura Nyro at the age of 11, he was left with a powerful and lasting impression of Nyro's unique blend of Broadway-inspired melodies, jazz improvisations and socially conscious lyrics. Childs returned to that early experience for his latest project, creating and orchestrating his newest album, Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. Orange County jazz fans will have the opportunity to hear Childs' loving homage to the late great Nyro at Segerstrom Center for the Arts tonight, October 17 at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

Muscle Shoals Live & Lisa Fischer to Return to Park City, 8/3
by Tyler Peterson - Jul 11, 2014

Casting a well-deserved spotlight on artists who typically do not take center stage (but clearly should do so more often), Muscle Shoals Live: The River That Sings returns to Park City for an encore performance August 3. Inspired by two remarkable 2013 Sundance films, "Muscle Shoals Live" and "Twenty Feet From Stardom," Park City Institute's Teri Orr teamed up with Muscle Shoals' Jesse Boyce to curate a concert featuring an outstanding collection of under-sung musicians hailing from a hotbed of talent and stardom known as the "Singing River;" Grammy winner Lisa Fischer (think jaw-dropping "Gimme Shelter" duet with Mick Jagger) tops the billing. This signature St. Regis Big Stars, Bright Nights concert starts at 7 p.m.; gates open at 5:30 p.m. at Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Lawn and reserved seating tickets are available.

Glenn Close Gets into Holiday Spirit at Documentary Benefit
by Tyler Peterson - Dec 22, 2013

At an event honoring the documentary 20 FEET FROM STARDOM at Edison Hotel's Rum House, Close reportedly hung 'back area of the bar singing and dancing along to Christmas carols.
