The Play Company's (PlayCo) 2015-16 Idea Lab features three curated events, November 18 & 28 and December 4, following performances of award-winning, German playwright Maria Milisavljevic's Abyss. The critically acclaimed U.S. premiere, directed by Maria Mileaf, runs through December 6 at Theaterlab, 357 West 36th Street. Writing about Abyss for The New York Times, Ben Brantley praised the 'poetic drama,' as 'genuinely artful...And it will take you places you didn't expect to go.' This story is more than relevant. It's riveting. Those who stand up for equality in 2015 are following in the footsteps of Bayard Rustin, the lesser known but powerfully influential civil rights leader who orchestrated the March on Washington and stepped forward himself as an openly gay man at a time when few had the courage to do so. In this ode, an exiled Rustin masterminds 'a tribute to the ancestors' 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. New Hampshire Theatre Project's 2015-16 season continues its celebration of women with Eleemosynary, a play by Lee Blessing that focuses on the lives of three brilliant women.  Dorothea, the grandmother, tries to shed the bonds of a controlling father and husband who refuse to give her a traditional education by striving to learn all she can in non-traditional ways.  Middle-aged daughter Artie attempts to flee her eccentric mother's world by saving lives from the seclusion of a research lab.  Trying to live up to her grandmother's expectations and win her mother's affection, 16-year-old Echo strives to be a spelling bee champion.  All three generations share a deep love of learning, a self-expectation of extraordinariness, and a desire to "fly" in their own special way.
