Laura Rathe Fine Art Presents Roi James / Katherine Houston: Genesis
by Christina Mancuso
- Dec 12, 2016
Dallas Design District gallery, Laura Rathe Fine Art (LRFA), announces the exhibition 'Genesis,' featuring new works by Texas artists, Roi James and Katherine Houston, with an opening reception on Saturday, January 7th from 5-8pm.
The pairing of Houston's 'reverse glass' paintings on acrylic with James's own unorthodox oil paintings and architectural wall sculptures, presents a wide range of techniques and mediums. Together the artists share an interest in creating bold, yet mysterious forms and environments that encourage deep contemplation. 'Genesis' will be on view through February 11, 2017.
About the Artists
Having emerged from a classical background, Austin-based artist, Roi James, began his career drawing inspiration from Romantic and Old Master painters. Today he draws influence from more modern and contemporary artists such as Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Mark Rothko, Bridget Riley, and Gerhard Richter. Highly polished and incorporating both biomorphic and geometric motifs, James's recent abstract paintings and sculptural works explore archetypal forms that simultaneously appear mysterious and familiar to the viewer.
James ultimately strives for each of his works to encourage meditation and contemplation. Using unorthodox methods to apply paint and explore color, shape, and form, the artist describes his process as a 'creative surrender' to his thoughts and emotions. Through this process James hopes to investigate 'how uncertainty can lead to meaning and understanding, how harmony can be experienced even within tension and chaos, and how the recognizable can rise out of purely abstract form.'
Houston-based artist, Katherine Houston, has devoted much of the past 20 years to studying and producing art. Her technique of 'reverse painting' involves applying acrylic paint to the back of Plexiglas sheets. This process presents special challenges for the artist, requiring that she work backwards in a very decisive manner, as she expertly resolves the foregrounds of her paintings first and their backgrounds last.
Houston's paintings begin with a color idea and eventually evolve into compositions in which color is the primary subject. Viewed through the surface of the reflective Plexiglas, her work appears remarkably luminous. Employing bold abstract motifs that subtly reference landscapes and the concept of infinite space, Houston describes her paintings as serene, happy places of her own design in which every brushstroke is guided by beautiful color.
