Judy Collins to Play Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, 10/17

Best known as a Grammy Award winning singer- songwriter, Judy Collins has also made her mark as advocate. Through her passion for words and music, she openly shares her survival of alcoholism and the loss of her son, who committed suicide at age 33. Her writing provides solace in the face of grief and loss. On October 17th, The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and MusicWorks will honor Ms. Collins by shining a spotlight on one of the five largest free-standing behavioral health providers in the United States, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, serving the greater Grand Rapids and national community for more than 100 years.

Bay Area Cabaret, devoted to presenting audiences with top performers who expand the definition of cabaret, launches its 11th season this fall at the Fairmont San Francisco's historic Venetian Room with an Opening Night Gala celebrating the work of songwriter/composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell, Pocahontas, Enchanted, Prince of Egypt). The evening will feature two on-stage interviews with Mr. Schwartz by ASCAP's Director of Musical Theatre Michael Kerker, and performances by Today Night Live's Ana Gasteyer, who performed the role of 'Elphaba' in Wicked on Broadway, and by two masterful interpreters of Schwartz' work, Liz Callaway and Michael McCorry Rose. This October 2014, Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris opens at the Charing Cross Theatre for a strictly limited six-week run from 16 October to 22 November 2014. Press night is set for Saturday 18 October at 7.45pm. Directed by multi-award-winning director Andrew Keates, the production features an all-star cast of Daniel Boys (Avenue Q, Spamalot, Love Story - also well-known from BBC's Any Dream Will Do, 2007), David Burt (The Merchant of Venice, The Beggars People, Plague Over England), Eve Polycarpou (In The Heights, Mother Courage, Jacques Brel - National Theatre, 1970s) and Gina Beck (Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mise?rables).

Grammy Award-winning artist Judy Collins makes her Segerstrom Center for the Arts debut in her Holidays and Hits concert on December 6 in the Rene?e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. It will be an evening of beloved holiday songs and music from her five-decade career that has produced such legendary interpretations as 'Both Sides Now,' 'Send in the Clowns' and 'Amazing Grace.' The New York Times states, 'Watching Ms. Collins perform ... is like studying a jewel that reveals new facets as it is slowly turned into the light.' Joining her will be the Passenger String Quartet.

American Theatre Wing's Annual Gala Raises Record-Breaking Amount

The American Theatre Wing announced today that its annual gala, held this past Monday evening at the Plaza Hotel, was the most successful in the organization's history, raising over $750,000 (besting the previous record, which was set in 2013, by more than $50,000). All proceeds from the evening will benefit the education and outreach programs of the American Theatre Wing, which include SpringboardNYC, the Theatre Intern Network, the National Theatre Company Grants and the Jonathan Larson Grants, and will also support free access for students, aspiring professionals, and the general public to programming on AmericanTheatreWing.org, including the long running 'Working in the Theatre' media program.

Acclaimed songwriter, singer, musician, columnist and author, Grammy Award-winner Janis Ian, who wrote and performed the anthems "At Seventeen" and "Society's Child", will make her debut appearance at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Sunday, September 21, at 8 p.m. She won her first Grammy in 1975 for "At Seventeen", and her second in 2013 for the category of Best Spoken Word album for her autobiography, Society's Child. Bissell House (378 Main St., Ridgefield) will pour a free glass of house wine or draught beer with dinner the night of this show when tickets/stubs are presented.
