Friedman Theatre. The limited engagement of THE COLUMNIST will open Wednesday, April 25 starring Tony and Emmy Award winner John Lithgow, Drama Desk Award nominee Margaret Colin, four time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines, Tony Award nominee Stephen Kunken,Marc Bonan (Broadway debut), Grace Gummer ('Smash,' Arcadia), and Brian J. The Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil) and Omniverse Vision Ltd. announced today that the critically-acclaimed performance featuring world-renowned Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil, LA Phil LIVE: Dudamel conducts Mahler 8, "Symphony of a Thousand," will be broadcast to movie theaters in six locations in the UK, beginning April 16.

A one-night-only staged reading of 8, the powerful play about the federal district court trial contesting the Proposition 8 voter ban in 2008 on same sex marriages in California, will have its New Jersey premiere at Montclair State University on Saturday, March 24 at the L. Howard Fox Theatre. The reading is set to feature: Roscoe Orman, Jamie Laverdiere, Rachel de Benedet, and Susan A. Cole, with a post show discussion with Jeff Zarrillo (moderated by Gavin Creel).

Today in 2002, Sweet Smell of Success opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 109 performances. Created by Marvin Hamlisch (music), Craig Carnelia (lyrics), and John Guare (book), the show is based on the 1957 movie of the same name. It tells the story of a powerful newspaper columnist named J. J. Hunsecker (based on famed New York columnist Walter Winchell) who uses his connections to ruin his sister's relationship with a man he deems inappropriate. The show starred John Lithgow as J.J. Hunsecker, and Brian d'Arcy James as Sidney Falcone.
