CSO's Seasonal Program ANGELS & DEMONS Set for 10/30-11/1

Colorful and intriguing music depicting saints and sinners (and several characters that combine those roles) makes up this exhilarating program. You'll enjoy everything from the haunting “Chaconne” from John Corigliano's Oscar-winning music for the movie The Red Violin to a cheeky mini-concerto for bassoon that pays homage to the “King of Rock and Roll” to the angelic strains of Pulitzer Prize-winner Aaron Jay Kernis' Musica Celestis. Led by guest conductor Vladimir Kulenovic, the program will feature guest violinist Liza Ferschtman and the CSO's principal bassoonist Betsy Sturdevant.

Leonard Slatkin will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct the New York Premiere of The Marie-Josee Kravis Composer-in-Residence Christopher Rouse's Flute Concerto, with Principal Flute Robert Langevin as soloist; Copland's El Salon Mexico; Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit (orchestrated by Marius Constant), marking the Philharmonic's first time performing the complete work; and Ravel's Bolero, Thursday, October 30, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. (performed without intermission); and Saturday, November 1 at 8:00 p.m.

In addition, the orchestra will be performing three of the greatest works in the classical music cannon: Smetana's The Moldau and Respighi's powerful Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome.

The Canton Symphony Orchestra's MasterWorks Series Opens With AMERICAN MOSAIC, 10/5

October 5, 2014 is opening night for the Canton Symphony Orchestra's (CSO) 2014-2015 MasterWorks Series. The concert, titled “American Mosaic”, features music by American composers John Corigliano, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Howard Hanson and Dudley Buck. The night also marks the first time audience members will be able to access Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, where the performance will be held, through the Zimmermann Symphony Center entrance. The pre-concert lecture, free to all ticket concert ticket holders, begins at 6:30pm and the concert begins at 7:30pm.

Joshua Bell Presents BACH, Available 9/30

Violinist Joshua Bell is one of the most acclaimed classical musicians of today - renowned for his expressive, elegant, intelligent playing and his deep commitment to bringing the classical tradition to wider audiences. Over the past three decades he has recorded more than 40 albums including most of the great violin repertoire. Now, Sony Classical is excited to announce that Bell has for the first time recorded the masterpieces of J.S. Bach with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In his third season now as their music director, Bell performs Bach's sublime Violin Concertos No. 1 and No. 2, along with a never-done-before 'violin and orchestra' arrangement of the famous Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 (adapted from Mendelssohn's piano accompaniment), the Gavotte en Rondeau from Partita No. 3 for solo violin (using Schumann's accompaniment), and the universally beloved 'Air on the G string'. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Joseph Kaiser will no longer be participating in the Sunday, September 21st performance of Voce: Rising Opera Stars in Recital. Paul Appleby (tenor) and Andrew Garland (baritone) will be joining Julia Bullock (soprano) and pianist, Steven Blier for the afternoon featuring French and American repertories.

Composer Mason Bates Joins San Francisco Conservatory of Music Faculty

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has announced the appointment of composer Mason Bates to its composition faculty. One of the most widely-performed symphonic composers of his generation, Bates is known for writing innovative, classically-conceived orchestral works that incorporate techniques derived from his career as a DJ and techno artist, such as electronic sounds and samples performed on drumpad and laptop. SFCM welcomes Bates as it expands its curriculum in traditional composition to encompass music technology and composing for film, games and other media.

American Opera Projects to Debut New Works at COMPOSERS & THE VOICE: SIX SCENES 2014, 9/12 & 14

A Stonewall-era drag queen and the cop entranced by her. A princess manipulates her captor during the Crusades. A man's literal vacation from Hell. On­­­­ Friday, September 12 and Sunday, September 14 at 7:30 PM, AOP (American Opera Projects) will present these and other excerpts of new operas at COMPOSERS & THE VOICE: SIX SCENES 2014, the culmination of this season's Composers & the Voice (C&V) opera training program. Audiences will see scenes by five emerging composers - Guy Barash, Avner Finberg, Jeremy Gill, Andreia Pinto-Correia, Gity Razaz - and one composer/librettist team, Joseph Rubinstein and Jason Kim, who were chosen by AOP to spend a year creating new works focusing on the operatic voice. The performances will be held at South Oxford Space in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, home of AOP. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students/seniors and are available at www.operaprojects.org.

The New York Philharmonic will present the second season of THE ART OF THE SCORE: Film Week at the Philharmonic September 16-20, 2014, offering two concert programs of film music - La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times: The Tramp at 100 - that highlight some of the genre's most distinctive uses of music.
