The 2013-14 season of the Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series continues in the New Year with The Escape Artist from Bessie and Obie Award-winning performance artist, musician and actor John Kelly. The New York Times said of the piece: 'You realize what you're watching isn't so much an artist inventing himself as inevitably discovering the true self within.' The performance takes place Friday, January 24, 2014 at Goodhart Hall, Bryn Mawr College.

Karlheinz Stockhausen's 70-minute masterpiece 'Stimmung' ('Tuning/mood/atmosphere'), for six amplified voices, will be performed at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica on Sat., Jan. 25, 2014 by VOXNOVA Italia, which is making its international debut with this concert. Founded 22 years ago in France as VOXNOVA, the widely acclaimed European vocal ensemble will be reincarnated in 2014 with five Italian contemporary vocal music specialists under the direction of founder, bass baritone Nicholas Isherwood.

Rachel Rosenthal Company's Instant Fairy Tales, the latest offering in Rachel Rosenthal's remarkable career, is a brand new quarterly series of original fairy tales for the 21st century. Instant Fairy Tales: The Longest Winter, the series' inaugural offering on January 25th and 26th at Espace DbD in Los Angeles, features an allegorical tale about learning to care for the environment. This first quarterly installment features costumes and sets in a visual style based on the 'ukiyo-e' woodcuts of Hokusai and Hiroshige, which depict the Japanese 'floating world' of the theatre, restaurants, teahouses, geisha, and the natural world.?

Cornish Music Series to Present Bach-Gamel Show at PONCHO Concert Hall, 12/8

The similarities between music of the European Baroque and Javanese Gamelan are explored in this concert which features Seattle's renowned gamelan ensemble, Gamelan Pacifica, with vocalist Jessika Kenney and four of today's Baroque music specialists Linda Tsatsanis (voice), Nathan Whittaker (cello), Janet See (flute), and Byron Schenkman (harpsichord). Part of the Cornish Music Series, the concert is Sunday, December 8 at 7 p.m. at PONCHO Concert Hall, 710 East Roy St., Seattle.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra to Present BAROQUE CONVERSATIONS, 12/5

Elegant themes and opulent variations by a wide range of Baroque composers set the tone for the holidays as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) features critically acclaimed virtuoso John Schneiderman playing lute and Baroque guitar in the first of five "Baroque Conversations" concerts on Thursday, December 5, 2013, 7 pm, at Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles. LACO Concertmaster Margaret Batjer, who hosts and curates the concert, is joined by LACO's Tereza Stanislav, violin, Armen Ksajikian, cello, Nico Abondolo, bass, and Patricia Mabee, keyboard. The program opens with Passacaglia in D major by Sylvius Leopold Weiss and also includes Karl Kohaut's Lute Concerto in F major (No. 1); Tarquinio Merula's Ciaccona; three sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti; the Ciaconna from Mauricio Cazzati's Varii e Diversi Capricci, Op. 50; and Arcangelo Corelli's "La Follia," Op. 5, No. 12, among other works. Critics have called Schneiderman "dazzling' and "expressive," noting that, "Schneiderman's tone… turns delicate textures into sparkling jewels."

Now in its 16th season, Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook will continue to expand its scope celebrating the best in American singing and songwriting. New this year, the opening night concert will befree, in the David Rubenstein Atrium, on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. 'Live From Lincoln Center,' the Emmy Award-winning program broadcast nationally on PBS stations, will shoot four of the first week's American Songbook concerts in The Allen Room: by James Naughton, Lawrence Brownlee, Jason Isbell, and Patina Miller. These performances will be broadcast nationally beginning in Spring 2014. In addition, American Songbook concerts taking place in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse at Lincoln Center will be live-streamed via http://watch.lincolncenter.org.

Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) presents filmmakers Roberta Friedman and Daniel Loewenthal's global documentary project based on experimental composer John Cage's 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs. The video installation, on view at BAC beginning Wednesday, December 11 through Sunday, December 15, creates striking visual and sound portraits taken from the streets of Beijing, Graz, Detroit, Cairo, and New York City, reflecting urban cultures in transition.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music series presents Chicago-based Ensemble dal Niente on Tuesday, November 5 at The Music Room, SPCO Center in downtown Saint Paul. The concert will feature the world premiere of a new work by Minnesota composer Noah Keesecker called The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms.
