Chantal Joffe's Portraits of Influential 20th Century Women to Fill Jewish Museum Lobby

Beginning May 1, two walls of the Jewish Museum's lobby will be filled with 34 new portraits by the London-based painter Chantal Joffe. This body of work explores Jewish women of the twentieth century, focusing on those who made major contributions to art, literature, philosophy, and politics - including Diane Arbus, Nancy Spero, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Susan Sontag, and Hannah Arendt.

Belarus Free Theatre Returns to New York Tonight with TRASH CUISINE at La MaMa

Belarus Free Theatre -- the internationally-acclaimed troupe said by Sir Tom Stoppard to 'defy gravity' -- returns to New York with the U.S. premiere of TRASH CUISINE at La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre (66 E. 4 St.) in Manhattan, it has been announced by Mia Yoo, La MaMa's Artistic Director. TRASH CUISINE began previews April 25, officially opens tonight, April 29, and runs through May 17.

PAPAYA to Close Season with MAYHEM POETS, 5/13-17

PA Performing Arts for Young Audiences (PAPAYA) wraps up its 2015 International Series with an appearance by spoken word  artists The Mayhem Poets.  Inspiring audiences with the power of language, these beat box bards take center stage as part of PAPAYA at the Bride, an International Family Series presented in partnership with the Painted Bride Art Center. The Mayhem Poets will have seven performances, including three school matinees May 13-17. OLIVER! to Run 5/15-24 at Beck Center

Beck Center Youth Theater closes its 66th season with Oliver! May 15 - 24, 2015 on the Mackey Main Stage. Featuring 56 Beck Center students, audiences will follow the adventures of the young orphan, Oliver Twist, as he explores the streets of London. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A special student matinee performance will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21. Tickets are on sale now.

Canadian Opera Company's BARBER OF SEVILLE Welcomes Tenor Francisco Brito

Toronto – The Canadian Opera Company regrets to announce that Romanian tenor Bogdan Mihai, who was scheduled to perform the role of Count Almaviva in Rossini's The Barber of Seville this May, has had to withdraw for personal reasons. Mihai was scheduled to sing three of the production's 12 performances. In his place, the COC has cast Argentine tenor Francisco Brito, who will make his Canadian debut. Brito shares the role of Count Almaviva with American tenor Alek Shrader who has been performing the role since the COC's production opened on April 17, 2015.

Soprano Talya Lieberman and baritone Edward Nelson, joined on piano by former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow Allen Perriello end the 32nd season of the Schwabacher Debut Recitals on Sunday, May 3 at Temple Emanu-El's Martin Meyer Sanctuary. The Merola Opera Program alumni will present an eclectic program showcasing works by Nico Muhly, Francis Poulenc, Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert and Kurt Weill. Toronto – The stage is set for opera's next generation of stars to shine, when the young artists of the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio take on Rossini's comic masterpiece, The Barber of Seville. This special performance takes place at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on May 15, 2015, with all tickets accessibly priced at $25 or $55. Seattle International Dance Festival Announces Extension, Thru 6/27

SEATTLE, WA – The 10th Annual Seattle International Dance Festival (SIDF), expands to a 16 day dance extravaganza. From June 12-27, 2015 the vibrant and thriving South Lake Union comes alive as dozens of indoor and outdoor performances by more than 200 international artists take over the neighborhood. This 10th edition of the festival celebrates Khamabtta Dance during their 25th anniversary season; special celebratory performances pay tribute during the festival's opening and closing weekends. Closing weekend is presented in partnership with Seattle Theatre Group when the evening dance performances move to the historic Moore Theatre and feature both Spectrum Dance Theater and Mexico's Ciudad Interior Contemporary Dance Company.
