Providence Mayor & FirstWorks Set PVD FESTIVAL Artist Lineup

Today, Mayor Jorge O. Elorza and FirstWorks Executive Artistic Director Kathleen Pletcher announced the artist roster of the PROVIDENCE INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL set for June 13th, 2015, with extended events taking place June 11th-14th. In this first-ever signature event, arts and culture stage a friendly takeover of the city with 500 artists, 30 public art installations, 15 stages, 18 participating venues, 6 outdoor bars, 3 jaw dropping spectacles, and much more. The dramatic scale and scope of this marquee Festival in the 'Creative Capital' of Rhode Island is due to the public-private partnership forged between the City's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism and FirstWorks, a Providence-based non-profit organization dedicated to building community through the arts. Festival lead sponsors include the National Endowment for the Arts, Providence Tourism Council, the Rhode Island Foundation, along with key support from IGT (formerly GTECH), and The Avenue Concept. All main Festival events are free and open to the public.

Today, May 14, The 'Mundo We Live In' art & performance exhibition will host an opening party for its show at the Paper Factory Hotel and Mundo New York restaurant in Long Island City as part of the annual LIC Arts Open event in May to showcase art and performances by emerging local and international artists. The work exhibited will present direct, gritty and revolutionary points of view that will challenge even the most jaded art aficionado. Running concurrently with the Frieze Art Fair New York, the 'Mundo We Live In Show' challenges more traditional ideas about artistic expression, a stone's throw from Frieze, but a world away.

Inspiring audiences with the power of language, these beat box bards take center stage as part of PAPAYA at the Bride, an International Family Series presented in partnership with the Painted Bride Art Center. The work exhibited will present direct, gritty and revolutionary points of view that will challenge even the most jaded art aficionado. Running concurrently with the Frieze Art Fair New York, the 'Mundo We Live In Show' challenges more traditional ideas about artistic expression, a stone's throw from Frieze, but a world away. 'The art in this show deals with the worlds we live in during our daily struggles, defects, and challenges and shows us where we come from and where we are going - on the outside and the inside of our perceptions and fears,' said Julián Calderón, director of artist relations, JP Art Acquisition, who curated the exhibition. 'The show was designed to challenge visitors to ask questions, comment and most of all share their thoughts about what they see,' added Calderón. Beginning today, May 1, two walls of the Jewish Museum's lobby will be filled with over 30 new portraits by the London-based painter Chantal Joffe. This body of work explores Jewish women of the twentieth century, focusing on those who made major contributions to art, literature, philosophy, and politics - including Diane Arbus, Nancy Spero, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Susan Sontag, and Hannah Arendt. Portraits of these women and others will be hung salon-style across two walls of the lobby. Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings: Chantal Joffe will be on view from May 1 through October 18, 2015.
