The 60th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival wrapped up Sunday, September 17 after a weekend of debut artists, returning masters and new favorites. Over 38,562 fans came through the gates of the Monterey County Fairgrounds during the weekend of September 15-17, which featured a record-breaking 137 performances and events of diverse styles of music from around the globe, from tributes and piano trios; big bands to modern jazz, salsa, tango, blues and bluegrass, modern classical, and high energy fusion groups, mixed with historic conversations, films, and exhibits.

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents Crosscurrents, a collaboration by virtuoso musicians Zakir Hussain and Dave Holland on October 28 at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Hussain, the world's foremost tabla master, joins forces with Holland bandleader, composer, and 2017 NEA Jazz Master bassist alongside a stellar quintet including saxophonist Chris Potter and vocalist Shankar Mahadevan. The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents Kate Evans: Threads, an evening with Evans, the acclaimed author, cartoonist, and activist on September 29 at 7:30pm in the Telus Studio Theatre as part of the Beyond Words series. Evans will reveal accounts of hope and hardship from France's Calais refugee camp as told in her 2017 graphic novel Threads: From the Refugee Crisis. With projected images from her book as the backdrop, and musical accompaniment by Iranian-Canadian hand drummer Hamin Honari, Evans will share a reading followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion.
