Gallo Center for the Arts Presents New Broadway Touring Production of DREAMGIRLS, Now thru 1/13

A sparkling new high-tech production of the Tony and Academy Award-winning musical 'Dreamgirls' is coming to the Gallo Center for the Arts for five performances today through Sunday, January 11 -13.

La Jolla's Re-Imagined SIDE SHOW to Include New Characters

According to an Equity casting notice, the revised version of the show will include some new characters- 'Auntie/Loretta' and 'Sir/Todd Browning.' While the latter seems to be a similar to 'The Boss,' who sang the opening song in the original production, the other is described as 'the woman who saved the twins from abandonment but began to display them as curiosities for money.' Additional new characters will include a Texas lawyer named 'Martin Arnold,' and a vaudeville performer named 'Ray.'

The lead roles of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton in the musical 'Side Show' are certainly among the most challenging in Broadway history. Along with performing the rewarding score, the two actresses must simulate their unfortunate 'Siamese twins' connection without gimmicks, because the show includes dream sequences in which they separate. They are literally joined at the hip but must rely solely upon practice-makes-perfect closeness.

SMALL FISH features music by Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls, The Tap Dance Kid); libretto and puppets by Susan J. Vitucci; direction by Jules Ochoa (How I Fell in Love); and musical direction by Ben Krauss.

In addition to discussing many aspects of her films to date and her starry assortment of co-stars and collaborators on them - Jennifer Hudson, Bill Condon, Bernie Mac, Samuel L. La Jolla Playhouse announces two additional productions for its 2013/2014 season. Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley (Glengarry Glen Ross, Memphis) will direct His Girl Friday, John Guare's (Six Degrees of Separation, The House of Blue Leaves) acclaimed adaptation of the Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur play The Front Page and the Howard Hawks film His Girl Friday, with screenplay by Charles Lederer, produced by Columbia Pictures. The production will kick off the season in June/July in the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

Schooled stars Tony nominee Peter Friedman (Playwrights Horizon's Circle Mirror Transformation), Sarah Steele (Lincoln Center Theatre/LCT3's Slowgirl), Harry Zittel (Lincoln Center Theatre/LCT3's All-American) and Zoe Winters (Lincoln Center Theatre/LCT3's 4000 Miles). The reading took place on Monday, December 3rd at The Davenport Studios, located at 250 West 49th Street, Suite 304, in New York City. Check out photos from the reading below!
