Afropop Worldwide to Celebrate 25th Anniversary with Star-Studded Gala, 9/19

On September 19th at City Winery in New York City, public radio's Afropop Worldwide celebrates 25 years of introducing Americans-and a global online community-to the most exciting music on the planet. The gala concert features Grammy Award Nominee and ngoni (African lute) virtuoso Bassekou Kouyatefrom Mali and his electrifying band Ngoni Ba. Special guest artists include Mali's Mamadou Kellyand Sudanese singing star Omer Ehsas and others. Harry Belafonte is Honorary Chair of the gala.
Getty Museum and CNP's PROMETHEUS BOUND Begins Today

This September, the Getty Museum and CalArts' Center for New Performance (CNP), in association with Trans Arts, will presentPrometheus Bound, the eighth annual outdoor theater production in the Getty Villa's Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater. Featuring a newly-translated text by noted poet and essayist Joel Agee, Prometheus Bound will be directed by Travis Preston, artistic director of CNP and dean of the CalArts School of Theater, and include original music by composer Ellen Reid and celebrated jazz multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia (who will also perform live onstage).

In the middle of the performance of THOKOZA: I Sing For Freedom on Monday night, August 19, at the Baruch Performing Arts Center, the audience recognized Harry Belafonte as the cast reprised his famous calypso songs and gave him a spontaneous show stopping standing ovation. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, TV One will air Sing Your Song, the critically-acclaimed documentary profiling revered African American singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte, on Sunday, August 25 at 11 am ET. This marks the basic cable network premiere of the 2011 documentary, which charts Belafonte's life as a rising black Hollywood star amid the social and political racism plaguing 1960s America, and his emergence as a figurehead of the civil rights movement.

Movies filmed in New York City that tapped into the turmoil, chaos, and social and cultural energies of the late 1960s and early 1970s are the subject of the screening series Fun City: New York in the Movies 1967-75, curated by film critic and historian J. Hoberman. The series, which will be accompanied by a new monograph written by Hoberman, includes nineteen films, and will be presented by Museum of the Moving Image from August 10 through September 1. The films include established classics such as Rosemary's Baby, The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy, and Dog Day Afternoon, as well as lesser known films such as The Angel Levine, Bye Bye Braverman, and Cotton Comes to Harlem.
