After a dinner out, the Whitaker family was ambushed upon returning to its Sugar Land, Texas, home in what authorities initially thought was a burglary gone wrong. All four members were shot - killing mother, Tricia, and younger son, Kevin, and wounding father, Kent, and elder son, Bart. The case took a twisted turn when Bart turned out to be the mastermind behind the murder-for-hire plot intended to kill his entire family and injure him as part of the cover-up. Bart has since been convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.

It is every parent's nightmare. After 12-year-old Payton Leutner was invited to a sleepover, her two 12-year-old friends stabbed her 19 times leaving her for dead in the Wisconsin woods. The defendants Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier claim they committed the horrendous attack to appease a mysterious fictional character - known as Slender Man. After a judge determines how long Morgan will be placed under state mental commitment this week, '20/20' features interviews with mothers of the perpetrators - Angie Geyser and Kristi Weier.

His Latvian fiancée, Angelika Graswald, survived and was convicted of involuntarily killing her fiancé. On Friday, “20/20” revisits the case that made headlines nationwide. Anchor Elizabeth Vargas sits down with Angelika in her first television interview since she was released from prison.
