A new opera by composer Eric Moe and librettist Rob Handel, The Artwork of the Future, will have its world premiere in a production by Fresh Squeezed Opera in five performances at HERE Performing Arts Center in SoHo on May 13, 14, 16, 18, and 19, 2023. The 70-minute work, scored for four singers and instrumental septet, is a lighthearted science-fiction opera that looks at the purpose of art in challenging times through the lens of comedy.

MOVE ME is the directorial debut of dancer / choreographer Kelsey Peterson. Co-directed by Daniel Klein, a former NYC / London chef (Bouchon, Craft, The Fat Duck) turned award-winning filmmaker and television creator who has created over 170 international short films. He is a founder of the acclaimed online documentary series The Perennial Plate, Executive Producer of PBS’s Road Food (2022), director of the PBS series Weekends With Yankee (2019 - 2022), and producer of the Emmy nominated PBS series The Victory Garden’s Edible Feast (2013).

Despite some great music, nobody ever said that Beethoven's FIDELIO is an easy opera to love. Yet, the reduced, revised and reconfigured 90-minute version that Heartbeat Opera premiered the other night--as part of this year's NY Opera Fest from the New York Opera Alliance--showed some fearless work that was somehow true to the original yet very current. This tale of the rescue of a political prisoner, Florestan, by his wife, Leonore, disguised as a prison guard, will always work. And the powerful use of a chorus of prisoners–here, represented by projected work of actual prison choruses from around the Midwest—was a master stroke.

Heartbeat will premiere adaptations of two operatic masterpieces, both radically staged, trimmed down and re-orchestrated: Mozart's DON GIOVANNI and Beethoven's FIDELIO.
