Local actress Micki Sharpe, seen in several performances of 'Nunsense' and its various sequels over the years both in Philadephia and in Delaware County, brings the brand's irreverent humor to The Media Theatre this summer in 'Nunsense Jamboree'.

Knowing full well it's popular reputation, but having seen only one production, I had moderately high expectations for The Muny's take on Dan Goggin's musical comedy, NUNSENSE. I'm not Catholic, so I assumed that some of the humor might be lost on me. Through osmosis alone, I've probably absorbed enough knowledge of the religion's rites, rituals and dogma to get the gist. There are some amusing bits to be found here and there, and this version makes sure to throw in some local humor as well, but the songs aren't especially memorable, and the jokes often fail to hit the mark. Maybe the real problem is the fact that this is a small, and sometimes even intimate, show that gets lost on The Muny's vast stage. However, there are some fine performances from a terrific cast deserving of your time and attention.

NUNSENSE is an international phenomenon and beloved favorite of community and regional theatres. The musical, which first premiered in 1985, has enjoyed over 8,000 productions worldwide and has been translated into over 20 languages. This summer Texas Repertory Theatre Compnay is producing the classic and clever musical. Their spin on the material leaves audiences rolling in the aisles and clamoring for more.

NUNSENSE premiered in 1983 at The Duplex in New York City. It was expanded and then re-opened Off-Broadway on December 12, 1985 at the Cherry Lane Theatre. There it won four Outer Critics' Circle Awards, including 'Best Off-Broadway Musical.' It moved to the Douglas Fairbanks Theater, where it ran for over 10 years. NUNSENSE is the second-longest running Off-Broadway show in history, and had become an international phenomenon by the time it closed. To celebrate 30 years of NUNSENSE, Dan Goggin's show about the Little Sisters of Hoboken received a new official cast recording titled NUNSENSE: 30th ANNIVERSARY CAST RECORDING.

Summer is one of those seasons where family-oriented musical theatre reigns supreme. This summer, Texas Repertory Theatre is presenting Dan Goggin's Off-Broadway smash NUNSENSE. Recently, I was invited to a rehearsal to interview the immensely gifted cast. In addition to a fantastic sneak peek of the hard work and infectious energy being pumped into the show, I chatted with NUNSENSE's cast and director about the show and how they're preparing for the sidesplitting screwball comedy.

Sometimes, all a writer/producer/director has to do is find one perfect combination of elements, that one elusive perfect formula, and it immediately takes off. More than that, it becomes a huge success, lasting for years and spawning a long line of sequels, spin-offs and imitators. Think the tv show Law & Order or the National Lampoon's series of movies. In the theatrical world, the equivalent musical might just be Nunsense. This hit musical comedy, with lyrics, book and music by Dan Goggin, has become the second longest running Off-Broadway show in history and has led to a number of sequels and spin-offs. In a nice bit of symmetry, Nunsense is now being presented at one of the area's most successful and longest-running venues, Theatre By the Sea.

The hilarious second chapter in the series of hit musical comedies, Nunsense II: The Second Coming by Dan Goggin, will be the final production of the Bickford Theatre's 2012/2013 season, once again starring Gwendolyn F. Jones as Reverend Mother, with performances tonight, May 31 through Sunday, June 23, 2013.
