Tony-Winning FENCES Breaks House Record for Third Time

The first Broadway revival of August Wilson's 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play FENCES, which won the Tony Award last night for Best Revival of a Play, broke the box office record for the third time at the Cort Theatre (138 West 48th Street, NYC) for the week ending June 13, 2010, grossing $1,057,268.50.

Today, I am recapping the 2010 Tony Awards as it was broadcast on CBS last night - and on NY1 for the first hour. I was particularly privileged to have my interviews conducted for BWW and TonyAwards.com used throughout both telecasts and was quite moved by the evening in general. But, first: let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start - as Ted Chapin, President of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization and the first presenter of the evening would surely recall from his friend Oscar Hammerstein - who, of course, also mentored Stephen Sondheim who personally selected last night's Best Actress winner Catherine Zeta-Jones for the revival of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.

FENCES Grosses Over $1 Million for Second Week

The current Broadway production of FENCES, written by August Wilson and starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, just reported its second week of over one million dollars in grosses, according to www.deadline.com. FENCES reported grossing $1,002,750 last week. The week of May 9, FENCES grossed $1,008,103.50, grossing more than any previous production at the Cort Theatre, where it is playing.
