The January broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin - begin with Alan Gilbert leading the Orchestra in an all-Mozart program: the Mass in C minor, Great, and Piano Concerto No. 22, featuring Emanuel Ax as soloist. The Mass features soprano Jennifer Zetlan, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, tenor Paul Appleby, baritone Joshua Hopkins, and the New York Choral Artists, directed by Joseph Flummerfelt.

This week, Mr. van Zweden will lead the Orchestra in Korngold's Violin Concerto, with Hilary Hahn as soloist; Beethoven's Symphony No. 7; and J. Wagenaar's Cyrano de Bergerac Overture, marking the Philharmonic's first time performing the work, tonight, November 26, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 28 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m.
Jaap van Zweden Leads NY Philharmonic Tonight

Jaap van Zweden - music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic as well as former concertmaster of Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - will return to the New York Philharmonic for the first time since his debut in April 2012 to conduct two weeks of concerts. In the first program, Mr. van Zweden will conduct Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for Violin and Viola, featuring Acting Concertmaster Sheryl Staples and Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8, tonight, November 20, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m.

With a pair of soulful arias by Vivaldi, mezzo Joyce DiDonato and her pianist David Zobel let the audience know right away that they were in for a different part of her artistry than we heard at her concert performance of Handel's ALCINA (also at Carnegie) a week earlier. With an emphasis on thoughtfulness rather than pyrotechnics, the result was less fun but nonetheless rewarding for the listener, with the program's “power to transport,” as the singer put it.

The New York Philharmonic's 2014 holiday season presents classic masterpieces and seasonal favorites, the return of a former Philharmonic principal and debuts, and continuing and new traditions. This year's schedule includes the annual Holiday Brass concert, this time with former Principal Trumpet Philip Smith returning to host and conduct the complete New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion sections; Handel's Messiah, led by Baroque specialist Gary Thor Wedow; the first-annual Holidays with the Philharmonic, led by Constantine Kitsopoulos and featuring a carol sing-along and The Night Before Christmas, narrated by Academy Award winner and New York Philharmonic Board Member Whoopi Goldberg (December 19) and humorist, journalist, and actor Mo Rocca (December 20), both in their Philharmonic debuts; and New Year's Eve: A Gershwin Celebration led by Bramwell Tovey and featuring vocalists Dianne Reeves, in her Philharmonic debut, and Norm Lewis, returning after his debut in the Philharmonic's production of Show Boat. The New Year's Eve concert will be telecast live nationally on Live From Lincoln Center on PBS stations.
H&M Celebrates Alexander Wang x H&M Launch

Last night, Alexander Wang and Margareta van den Bosch of H&M were joined by celebrities including Fan Bing Bing, Chris Lee, 2NE1 and Sunny Wang to celebrate the launch of the Alexander Wang x H&M collection. LAN Wave, a raw, industrial space located along the Huangpu River was set-up with multi-level scaffolding and LED lighting elements to create a nightclub atmosphere.

The New York Philharmonic will soon present a semi-staged production of Kern & Hammerstein's Show Boat, November 5-8, 2014.As previously announced, the New York Philharmonic's production of Show Boat will star Christopher Fitzgerald as Frank, Norm Lewis as Joe, Alli Mauzey as Ellie, Julian Ovenden as Gaylord Ravenal,Edward Watts as Steve, Fred Willard as Cap'n Andy, NaTasha Yvette Williams as Queenie, Vanessa Williams as Julie, Jane Alexander as Parthy, Erika Henningsen as Kim, and Lauren Worsham as Magnolia. All cast members will be making their New York Philharmonic debuts in this production. As previously announced, the performances will be conducted and directed by Ted Sperling and choreographed by Randy Skinner.
The production will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center on PBS stations. The air date will be announced at a later time. BroadwayWorld takes you inside the rehearsal room below!

Tonight, October 31 at 8:00 p.m., Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in its first of four Carnegie Hall concerts this season in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The orchestra performs Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, 'Resurrection' with soprano Angela Meade, mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, and the Westminster Symphonic Choir under the direction of Joe Miller.
