Cantata Singers concludes its season with a program exploring Jewish history, culture, and music on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 8pm in Jordan Hall. Paired with Arthur Honegger's dramatic psalm King David, Cantata Singers will present Yehudi Wyner's Torah Service alongside Yiddish art songs and choruses by his father, Lazar Weiner, works rarely heard on the concert stage.

Esprit Orchestra's high-energy 2016/17 Season Finale concert, will take place on April 2, 2017 at Koerner Hall. Founding Music Director and Conductor, Alex Pauk, will lead the orchestra in a program inspired by humanity's infatuation with machinery and the impressive forces of man-made technologies.

Cantata Singers' 2016-2017 season opens on October 15th at NEC's Jordan Hall with a concert featuring two Bach cantatas, and the virtuosic "Laetatus sum" for solo voices by Czech Baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. Bach's Cantata 109, "Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben," examines the inner conflict between doubt and faith with deeply engaging, intricately woven music. The fiery finale sets one of the most famous of Lutheran hymns, "Durch Adams Fall," to music. The radiant and richly expressive Cantata 147, "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben," features what has become some of Bach's most famous music (known colloquially as "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"). eweddle@cantatasingers.org

From today, February 12 to 21, 2015, the Geneva-based Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR), one of Switzerland's leading orchestras, tours to California, New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC to perform its signature interpretations of early 20th-century French and Russian repertoire. Conductor Charles Dutoit, born in Lausanne in the Suisse romande, the French-speaking part of Switzerland, leads the OSR in Debussy's “Ibéria”, Ravel's La valse and Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2 in separate programs, and Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale. Russian pianist Nikolaï Lugansky joins the OSR in performances of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. With these programs, Mr. Dutoit pays tribute to the flagship repertoire and spirit of his mentor Ernest Ansermet, the founder and longstanding music director of the OSR.

The New England Philharmonic (NEP), under the direction of Richard Pittman, has announced their 2014-15program, the 38th season of the volunteer orchestra. Delighted to see the mandate of Kent Nagano continue until 2020, the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal was filled with renewed enthusiasm today when it presented, at Maison symphonique de Montreal, a 2014-2015 season that is dazzling and richly diversified - a season that promises deep emotions! The 2014-2015 season offers a number of sensational programs built around major works of the repertoire, some of them large in scale and some of them discoveries. Classicism and modernity rub shoulders throughout the season. In the foyer Allegro at Maison symphonique, Kent Nagano, music director of the OSM, unveiled the details of the 2014-2015 programming, accompanied by Stephane Levesque, principal bassoon with the Orchestra, and Mylene Paquette, the navigator who did a solo crossing of the Atlantic last fall. The piece pulls together massive forces of orchestra, chorus and soloists for an impassioned and dramatic blockbuster of human emotion. Perhaps best known for the famous 'Dies irae' movement, prevalent in pop culture in movies, advertisements and television, Verdi's masterpiece depicts a journey from terror and darkness to joy and light.

George Rothman will lead Riverside Symphony in a performance of Arthur Honegger's masterful Symphony No. 2, a meditation on the horrors of World War II whose hopeful ending echoes the chorale finale of Bach's heart-stopping Cantata No. 51 featuring soprano sensation Nell Snaidas. Featured in the film classic "Black Rain," Takemitsu's exquisite modern Romantic opus, Death and Resurrection, reveals spiritual concerns similar to those of Honegger over the same cataclysmic event as experienced in the Pacific theater, while the brilliant early 18th century English composer Charles Avison - unsung to this day - is represented by one of 12 luminescent, unique creations fashioned around works for solo keyboard by Bach contemporary Domenico Scarlatti.
