Dynamic New BSO NOW Streams Announced For March And April

The Boston Symphony Orchestra brings its first-ever all-online season—with near weekly concert streams distributed through its new streaming platform BSO NOW, November 2020-April 2021—to an end with four programs led by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons, released each Thursday at noon, March 25–April 29, at www.bso.org/now.

Tan Dun Conducts TŌN In U.S. Premiere Of His Violin Concerto At Lincoln Center

Tan Dun, world-renowned composer, conductor, and Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, will take the podium for the opening concert of The Orchestra Now's Rose Theater series at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Dec. 15, 2019. The program will be highlighted by the U.S. premiere of Dun's 2018 Violin Concerto: Rhapsody and Fantasia featuring the award-winning Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing, who recently premiered Dun's Fire Ritual a?" A Musical Ritual for Victims of War with the Oslo Philharmonic. Hemsing is also the subject of the upcoming documentary Forte directed by David Donnelly, focusing on women in the arts. Other works on the concert include Stravinsky's Fireworks, Debussy's Rhapsody for Clarinet with Hungarian soloist and TŌN musician Viktor Tóth; and Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin Suite.

The Orchestra Now (TŌN) will open its 2019 fall season in New York City on Oct. 27 with Strauss' Don Quixote & The Last Knight, the first of three programs in its popular Sight & Sound series at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Emperor Maximilian I of Austria, often referred to as “the last knight,” was passionate about the exploration of chivalry and armor. There is no more influential tale of knighthood than Cervantes' Don Quixote, which inspired Strauss' “Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character,” the composer's moving musical realization of Quixote's chivalric journey. Both soloists at this performance are talented young TŌN musicians: cellist Lucas Button, a Syracuse native, and Peruvian violist Leonardo Vásquez Chacón.

The Orchestra Now (TŌN), the visionary orchestra and master's degree program founded by Bard College president, conductor, educator, and music historian Leon Botstein, begins its fifth season on September 14, 2019. Five different series and three special events will offer 19 diverse programs and 31 performances presenting novel combinations of both time-honored and lesser-known repertoire through May 17, 2020. Since the Orchestra's launch in 2015, the young members of TŌN have performed 261 works by 137 composers for more than 50,000 people in 23 venues, with 158 soloists and 15 conductors.

For two nights, Odyssey Opera presents an Italian-language fully staged performance of Guiseppe Verdi's seventh opera, Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc). This rarely-heard treasure premiered in 1845 and dates from the middle of the first decade of the composer's long career.

For one night only, Odyssey Opera presents a semi-staged English-language performance of Arthur Honegger's dramatic oratorio Jeanne d'Arc au b cher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), a genre-defying masterpiece described as having the perfect cohesion between words and music. A hybrid of Honegger's eclectic score and sung/spoken libretto by French poet/playwright Paul Claudel, Joan is brought to life in this vivid and emotional drama. Performing the lead role of Joan of Arc is acclaimed actor/dancer Shura Baryshnikov. Conductor Gil Rose leads a full orchestra and chorus featuring the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum and the Premier Choir of the Boston Children's Chorus.

Boston's Odyssey Opera Announces 2017-18 Fifth Anniversary Season

Following Odyssey Opera's 2016-17 season dedicated to works inspired by the writings of Oscar Wilde, Artistic and General Director Gil Rose today announced the company's 2017-18 season: Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years War, featuring operatic masterpieces that tell the story of martyr, saint, and military leader Joan of Arc (1412-1431). Representing a wide range of styles, Odyssey Opera presents five operas that interpret the mysterious medieval world Joan inhabited. Opening the season is Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orleans followed by L'assedio di Calais by Gaetano Donizetti, The Trial at Rouen by Norman Dello Joio, Jeanne d'Arc au Bucher by Arthur Honegger, and Giovanna d'Arco by Giuseppe Verdi.
