As a historical fiction, this modern classic pits Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, after a decade of imprisonment for her part in a rebellion against her husband King Henry II of England. Photo Flash: First Look at 1st Stage's THE FARNSWORTH INVENTION
by Stephi Wild - Feb 18, 2018

In his return to playwriting, celebrated film and television writer Aaron Sorkin's signature style lends itself to the remarkable story of the invention that changed our lives. In 1929, two ambitious visionaries race against each other to invent a device called "television." Separated by two thousand miles, each knows that if he stops working, even for a moment, the other will gain the edge. Who will unlock the key to the greatest innovation of the 20th century: the ruthless media mogul, or the selftaught Idaho farm boy? The answer comes to compelling life in the regional premiere of this "firecracker of a play" (The Chicago Sun-Times).

BWW Review: Keegan Theatre's TOP GIRLS is Still Relevant and Still Faulty
by Benjamin Tomchik - Nov 10, 2017

Watching Top Girls you can't help but have a feeling of d j vu that many of the issues raised by Churchill are still ongoing. You also have a sense of sadness that little progress seems to have been made. Still, and despite that problematic third act, Top Girls remains timely and relevant.

by Andrew White - Sep 3, 2017

Robert McNamara's current production gives us everything you need for an exciting evening of Shakespeare, even for those who wouldn't know a Colosseum if it dropped into their front yards. The combination of high-octane performers, solid in the pentameter and carefully directed, is thrilling to watch. You can't miss this one.

BWW Review: 1st Stage's TREVOR Focuses on Absurdity
by Roger Catlin - Feb 8, 2017

Living in Connecticut eight years ago when a chimp being kept as a pet ripped the face off a neighbor, I found it tough to see anything but stark horror in the attack.

Photo Flash: 1st Stage presents DC Region Premiere of TREVOR
by A.A. Cristi - Feb 7, 2017

How would you feel if the person closest to you, someone with whom you interact daily, whom you care for and who cares for you, didn't understand a word you were saying and vice versa? This communication challenge is the point on which balances the story of 200-pound chimpanzee, Trevor and his owner, Sandra. As a one-time commercial and television star alongside the likes of Morgan Fairchild, Trevor is desperate to prove his relevance in a world that has moved on now that he is no longer the adorable baby monkey of his youth. His owner Sandra swears he is still harmless and childlike, protecting herself from the realities of Trevor's dangers and the deep wounds of her own losses. Based on a true story, Trevor is a tale about how relationships, flaws, and excuses can tip-toe a delicate line between side-splitting humor and dangerous misunderstandings. Trevor and Sandra's relationship spins comically and dangerously out of control in this theatrical story by "Orange is the New Black" writer, Nick Jones. The Chicago Sun-Times hailed Trevor as a "hugely entertaining tragicomedy."

BWW Review: Ambitious ANTIGONE NOW at Scena Theatre Falls Short of its Potential
by Pamela Roberts - Mar 30, 2016

ANTIGONE NOW is based on the nearly 2,500-year-old Sophocles drama, but in Scena Theatre's hands it could use even more time to gel. From missed lines to erratic pacing, ANTIGONE NOW squanders its interesting potential and never hits its stride.

BWW Reviews: Taffety Punk's TEMPEST Another Triumph For the 'Riot Grrrls'
by Andrew White - Feb 9, 2015

Taffety Punk's current production of The Tempest demonstrates how Shakespeare's work is infinitely elastic in terms of creativity and casting. Riot Grrrls, a faction of Taffety Punk Theatre Company dedicated to all-female productions of the Bard's works, has come up with a low-tech, low-cost, intimate staging that is as finely tuned as anything you'd pay big bucks for uptown.
