Arts on the Horizon Presents Kids Holiday Show SNOW DAY, Now thru 12/14

Arts on the Horizon, the DC metro area's only theatre company that is exclusively focused on creating original work for children ages 0 - 6, presents Snow Day, which will run today, December 3 - 14, 2014 at the W-3 Theatre at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. This nonverbal play, written and directed by Rex Daugherty, includes live violin music. Snow Day is created specifically for an audience of children ages 2 - 6 and their families.

This Arts on the Horizon production captures the spirit of wintertime fun for young children and their families just in time for the holiday season. One cold December morning, a young girl named Skip wakes up to find the entire neighborhood covered in a thick, dazzling blanket of white snow. A playful (if not a little mischievous) winter elf takes her on an adventure in which she experiences all the excitement, joy, and wonder of her very first snow day.

The cast features local, professional, adult performers Amanda Forstrom as Skip and Natalie Cutcher as Jane Frost. Ms. Forstrom has performed locally with WSC Avant Bard and Taffety Punk Theatre Company while Ms. Cutcher has performed locally with Rorschach Theatre and Faction of Fools. Playwright and Director Rex Daugherty has written numerous plays produced in the DC metro area, and has recently directed at No Rules Theatre Company for the DC premiere of Late: a cowboy song. Esther Covington has been playing violin and piano for over 25 years and has performed with such companies as Baltimore Shakespeare Festival and Studio Theatre. Costumes are designed by Dorothy Barnes, and Sara Conte is the set and properties designer.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Arts on the Horizon will be collecting mittens, hats, scarves, and other winter weather gear for local Alexandria children in need. Donation bins will be set up in the Workhouse Arts Center lobby during the run of Snow Day, December 3 - 14, 2014.

ABOUT ARTS ON THE HORIZON - Founded in 2009, Arts on the Horizon is a non-profit theatre with a specific focus of providing performances and education programs for the very young. Our original performances are designed to take place in an intimate setting where children not only feel comfortable to learn and explore, but are also an integral part of the performance. We have the utmost respect for children and want what may be their first theatrical performance to entertain them, challenge them, spark creativity and enhance the imaginative play in which many children this age engage. Since 2011, our non-verbal productions have been performed on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Workhouse Arts Center, The Athenaeum and other venues and schools in the DC metro area. In May 2013, the company performed at Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare as part of the national One Theatre World Festival. In addition to our performances, we also offer education programs, which provide targeted exploration of themes and ideas in order to help children enhance their language development, socialization, and fine and gross motor skills; all within a meaningful, nurturing environment where children can develop their sense of self and increase their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Performances of Snow Day run at the W-3 Theatre at the Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton, VA 22079. Performances are Wednesday - Sunday, December 3 - 7 and 10 - 14, 2014 at 10:30 am. Tickets are $8 for children and adults and can be purchased online at www.ArtsOnTheHorizon.org or at the door on the day of the performance. Children under 12 months old are admitted free of charge.

Arts on the Horizon offers a military family rate of $5 per ticket for all performances in Virginia. Active duty military personnel and their family can purchase these discounted tickets directly on the website and will need to show a current military ID when picking up their tickets on the day of the performance.
