Pittsburgh Symphony's Classical BBQs to Bring Summer to Heinz Hall, 7/11 & 8/2

?A night for the entire family, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is hosting two Classical BBQ events in the Heinz Hall Summer Garden on July 11 and August 2.  Each Classical BBQ is filled with orchestral favorites in a fun-filled atmosphere, including pre- and post-concert entertainment and a chance to mingle with Pittsburgh Symphony musicians.

Opera Philadelphia Presents Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, Now thru 6/14

Legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955) was “a genius who lived fast and died young, revolutionizing an art form in a few short years” (NPR). The Grammy Award-winning bebop legend is the subject of Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, the first world premiere in almost four decades for Opera Philadelphia, recognized by Opera News as “one of the leading instigators of new work in the country.” The new chamber opera was created for American tenor Lawrence Brownlee, a nominee for the 2015 International Opera Male Singer of the Year Award, by composer Daniel Schnyder, whose “thrilling classical-tinged jazz blend…constantly pushes the envelope” (Jazz Times), to a libretto by award-winning poet and playwright Bridgette Wimberly. Directed by Ron Daniels under the leadership of Music Director Corrado Rovaris, Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD premieres in Opera Philadelphia's Aurora Series for Chamber Opera, crowning the company's 40th Anniversary Season with a five-performance run in the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater (June 5–14).  Inspired by the musical connection of people, place, and culture, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Christopher Wilkins, announces the 2015 summer's free concerts at the DCR's Hatch Shell. Free concerts will be held every Wednesday evening (7 p.m.) beginning July 15 thru August 26, 2015.  Neighborhood concerts and youth engagement residencies featuring Brazilian composer, pianist and vocalist Clarice Assad continue throughout the summer beginning on July 12 (6 p.m.) at Pinebank Promontory in Jamaica Plain and through August 14 at John F. Music Mountain to Welcome Calidore String Quartet with Daniel Phillips & More, 6/19-21

Music Mountain, America's oldest continuing summer chamber music festival, continues its 86th anniversary season with the Calidore String Quartet and guest artist Daniel Phillips, viola on Sunday, June 21st (3PM) performing Schubert, Caroline Shaw, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. Also this weekend, America's foremost Gilbert & Sullivan repertory ensemble, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, honors their 40th anniversary season on Saturday, June 20th (6:30PM) including a special pre-concert dinner at The Falls Village Inn (5PM). This weekend also marks the beginning of the new Distinguished Artist Recital Series - a series of three evening recitals on Fridays (7:30pm) featuring the talents of this summer's visiting faculty. Music Mountain has a long-standing tradition of bringing musicians of all ages to Gordon Hall. This weekend is a glowing example of this mission - the young Calidore String Quartet is embarking on their 4th year as an ensemble, while The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players are celebrating their 40th year! Pacific Northwest Ballet Finishes Season with CARMINA BURANA Tonight

SEATTLE, WA – PNB closes its 2014-2015 season with CARMINA BURANA, a dynamic duo of repertory works. Set to Shostakovich's galvanic score, Alexei Ratmansky's crowd-pleasing Concerto DSCH, an “endlessly suspenseful construction [with] passages of breathtaking dance brilliance” (New York Times) dazzles the eyes and ears with its playful, propulsive energy and glimpses of storytelling. In Kent Stowell's primal Carmina Burana, a grand-scale synthesis of dance, chorus, and orchestra, the famous cantata's poems materialize as the entire Company unites song and score for a jubilant communal experience under Carmina scenic designer Ming Cho Lee's colossal golden wheel. The program also includes a musical prelude to shine the spotlight on the world famous PNB Orchestra, currently celebrating its 25th Anniversary.  CARMINA BURANA runs for seven performances only, May 29 through June 7 at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. Pacific Symphony Celebrates André Previn as Part of 15th American Composers Festival Tonight

One of America's most versatile and prolific living composers, Andre Previn, joins Pacific Symphony as the honored guest and focus of the 15th American Composers Festival (ACF). Previn, who has been called one of America's least easily categorized musicians, began his remarkable career as a Hollywood "wunderkind" and a best-selling jazz pianist. Now 86, Previn has received four Academy Awards for his work in film, 10 Grammy Awards for his recordings (plus one more for his Lifetime Achievement), and he is also an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He's held a series of major conducting posts, including the L.A. Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, but now exclusively composes. The concert is led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, whose great admiration for the legend shaped this year's ACF to reveal the scope of Previn's prowess as a composer.

The North Carolina Symphony launches its 2015 Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series at Cary's Booth Amphitheatre today, May 23, at 7:30 p.m., with a concert program that features pianist Timo Andres performing Gershwin's incomparable Rhapsody in Blue, the orchestra's performance of Dvo?ak's New World Symphony, and other works by Copland and Sousa that feature "citizen musicians" as they join the orchestra. 

Opera Saratoga & Words After War to Host Writing Workshop Alongside THE LONG WALK

Opera Saratoga, in partnership with the literary organization Words After War, will present a writing workshop to civilians, veterans and military families on July 11 and July 12, 2015 at The New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs, NY. The two-day event will be held in conjunction with the world premiere of The Long Walk, by Composer Jeremy Howard Beck and Librettist Stephanie Fleischmann. The opera is based upon the critically acclaimed memoir of war and homecoming by Brian Castner.
