Birdland Jazz Club has announced its schedule for June 15 - June 21, featuring "Four Generations of Miles," with Jimmy Cobb, Mike Stern, Buster Williams, Sonny Fortune; Erich Bergen; Merman's Apprentice featuring Richard Kind, Klea Blackhurst and Anita Gillette; and more!

In Merman's Apprentice in Concert

Stephen Cole and David Evans musical fable, Merman's Apprentice, will appear at the historic Birdland stage for one-night-only, Monday, June 15 at 7pm. Directed by Igor Goldin (Yank) the cast features P.J. Benjamin, Klea Blackhurst, Anita Gillette, Richard Kind, and Elizabeth Teeter supported by a six piece band with orchestrations by Lynn Shankel. Merman's Apprentice is a new musical fable with Book & Lyrics by Stephen Cole (After the Fair, The Road To Qatar, Night of the Hunter) and Music by David Evans (Birds of Paradise, Children's Letters To God). Theater and cabaret star Klea Blackhurst will star as Ethel Merman, with a cast lead by Tony nominee Richard Kind as David Merrick, Tony nominee Anita Gillette, 13 year-old Elizabeth Teeter (currently playing Young Queen Elizabeth in The Audience on Broadway), Eddie Korbich and Brian Charles Rooney.

Jim Caruso's Cast Party

Jim Caruso's Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It's a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars, backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.

Miles Davis' career as a trumpeter, composer and bandleader is synonymous with the stylistic evolution of jazz. His ensembles and recordings are the benchmarks for cool, post-bop and fusion as evidenced by these four-generations of artists who first gained recognition under Davis' leadership. Drummer Jimmy Cobb appeared on one of the most popular and influential recordings in history, "Kind of Blue" (1959) while guitarist Mike Stern ("We Want Miles," 1981), bassist Buster Williams ("Directions," 1960s) and alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune ("Big Fun," 1974) have the post-bop and fusion bases well covered.

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 14th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

The Peter Mazza Trio

Peter Mazza is a jazz guitarist born and raised in NYC, who holds degrees from both the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School. His first pivotal gig was leading a four-night-a week jam session at Augie's Jazz Bar (now called Smoke), where he played with Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove, Joel Frahm, Chris Potter, Donny McCaslin, Uri Cane, Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier, Dwayne Burno, Greg Hutchinson, Jeff Ballard and many others. Peter went on to gain acceptance to the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition and was a semifinalist. His groups have been featured at New York City jazz venues, such as Dizzy's Club, Birdland, The Knitting Factory and the Cornelia Street Café.

Erich Bergen Live!

The Broadway at Birdland series is proud to present performer Erich Bergen, who will make his triumphant return to the Birdland stage on Sunday, June 21 at 6pm and Monday, June 22 at 7pm. Erich last played Birdland in December for two sold out performances. Erich Bergen, best known for his performance as Bob Gaudio in the Clint Eastwood film "Jersey Boys," and the current hit CBS drama "Madam Secretary," will bring his dry wit and smooth vocals to the Birdland stage, featuring songs from his stage and screen career, and songs from his two EP releases; his self-titled debut, and the recent "Never Give Up."

Arturo O'Farrill Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.
