BWW Review: ULSTER AMERICAN at The Abbey Theatre

I was prepared for controversial and shocking, for colourful language and violence. Yet the opening scene still had me reeling. Writer David Ireland clearly thrives on the taboo and no person or subject is immune. A seemingly innocuous setting: the director's lounge. On the eve of rehearsals for a new play, a British director, Northern Irish playwright and American movie star gather to cement their collaboration.

BWW Review: WOYZECK, Old Vic

The very survival into the 21st century of an unfinished play written by a 23-year-old in 1836 is an extraordinary thing, made more extraordinary by the grimness of its subject. Even to call Georg Buchner's text a play - 'the world's first working-class tragedy' - is a bit of a stretch.

BWW Review: X, Royal Court Theatre, April 6 2016

Playwright Alistair McDowall has been hailed as one to watch out for in British theatre. His production of Pomona last year at the National Theatre was championed by critics and theatre-goers and so there is much anticipation surrounding his latest play, X currently being staged at the Royal Court's Jerwood Theatre Downstairs. The production takes place on a research base on Pluto, where the crew have lost contact with earth and can do nothing but sit tight and wait for someone to rescue them.

BWW Reviews: DUNSINANE Concocts a Credible Sequel to Shakespeare's Scottish Play

What happens when two of the world's most extraordinary theater companies, the England's Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland, make the decision to work together on a sequel to Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, one of his darkest and most powerful works? It's no less than a magical combination of talent that makes an improbable tale seem to be the essence of truth about sex, politics and power. Patricia Wolff, Interim Artistic Director of The Wallis adds, "David Greig's thrilling new drama brilliantly straddles the ancient and modern worlds, playing like a cross between "Game of Thrones" and "House of Cards."

BWW Interviews: Luke Kernaghan Talks DUNSINANE and the Continuation of MACBETH

What if Shakespeare's Macbeth wasn't the end of the story? It's intriguing, isn't it; to consider a world in which Lady Macbeth might have survived, for she would most certainly not have gone quietly into the night. Playwright David Greig thought so too and, beginning March 27th, LA Shakespeare lovers will have a chance to see his modern day sequel to The Scottish Play when the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Shakespeare Company bring DUNSINANE to The Wallis in Beverly Hills.

RSC's DUNSINANE to Play The Wallis, 3/27-4/05

BWW Reviews: DUNSINANE In Macbeth's Scotland a Timeless Quest for Justice

Dunsinane, presented by The Shakespeare Theatre Company through February 21, shows us that the precarious balance among victor, vanquished, and peace-keeper is a timeless dilemma stretching from Macbeth's heaths to the Iraqi dessert. Dunsinane picks up where Shakespeare's Macbeth leaves off, when the English army, camouflaged as forest trees, kills the tyrant and takes the seat of power. But in the confusion of the skirmish a critical and messy mistake is made: the Queen of Scotland, Lady Macbeth, remains alive. With the queen living and with a claim to the throne, many in the country will refuse to accept a newly-installed king.

DUNSINANE Begins Tonight at Shakespeare Theatre Company

The Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) presents Dunsinane, playwright David Greig's majestic sequel to Shakespeare's Macbeth, presented by the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and directed by Roxana Silbert. First premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Hampstead Theatre in 2010, this tour marks the U.S. premiere of Dunsinane after a highly successful tour to East Asia and Russia in spring 2014. Hailed by The Guardian as 'a work of compelling intelligence, provocation and wit,' Dunsinane will play at the Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) from tonight, February 4-21, 2015.
