The romantic landscapes of the Rhenish Symphony transport you to Schumann’s beloved Rhineland, with an evocation of the magnificent Cathedral at Cologne—a gothic marvel that calls for stately brass and wind fanfares. And when is the last time you heard a bassoon concerto? At this concert you’ll have that rare opportunity. Marc Neikrug’s Bassoon Concerto, co-commissioned for our own Christopher Millard and principal bassoonists of three other orchestras, shows off the instrument’s lyrical voice as well as its “athletic” ability to perform leaps and bounds.
