Inon Barnatan’s “firecracker technique” (~Washington Post) is on sizzling display in Ravel’s jazzy Piano Concerto (which also has a gorgeous middle section). And speaking of fireworks, did you know that Beethoven “lit up the sky” with sound effects of his own? Check it out as you listen to his Sixth Symphony, in which he unleashed the elements with an amazingly realistic storm—probably the first in classical music—with howling winds, rolling thunder, and crackling lightning.
