The American Premiere of the new musical, A GIRL CALLED VINCENT, by Carmel Dean (AMERICAN IDIOT) begins performances October 19 at James Madison University.

Carmel Dean, best known for music directing AMERICAN IDIOT on Broadway, composed the 16 songs using Edna St Vincent Millay's poetry as lyrics. Mariana Elder (THE BURNT PART BOYS) is the bookwriter.

Billed as a "theatrical song cycle inspired by the poetry and writings of Edna St. Vincent Millay", A GIRL CALLED VINCENT is a musical celebration of the life and work of Pulitzer-Prize winning poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay. Known for her activism, feminism, and love affairs throughout the Jazz Age in New York's Greenwich Village, this contemporary musical explores her passionate, spirited yet often tormented life, through music, poetry and spoken word.

In addition to leading the onstage band in AMERICAN IDIOT, Carmel Dean was the Vocal Arranger and Associate Musical Director of Broadway's THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. She has also served as Chita Rivera's musical director for many of her national and international concert appearances. Other New York credits include: EVERYDAY RAPTURE, VANITIES, and ELEGIES; A SONG CYCLE. She and Mariana Elder are graduates of NYU's Musical Theatre Writing Program.

Performances of A GIRL CALLED VINCENT run Oct 19-22 in the Studio Theatre of the Forbes Center at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The directors are Kate Arecchi and Hannah Alter.
