Appearing for the first time in New Zealand, this world-class orchestra and choir will perform two major Bach concerts during the Festival: St John Passion and Lutheran Masses.
Formed in 1990 to introduce Japanese audiences to great works from the Baroque period, Bach Collegium Japan has since toured the world and appeared at major festivals including the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival. Musical Director Maestro Masaaki Suzuki is an international authority on the work of Bach, and was heralded by BBC Magazine as one of the most powerful figures in music.

Composed in Leipzig for the first Sunday after Easter, BWV 42 is rare for a cantata in this cycle for including an introductory instrumental sinfonia – performed here – which is thought to be the opening movement of a lost concerto grosso. Bach’s Lutheran masses, often referred to as Missae breves (literally, “short masses”), are largely derived from Bach’s earlier cantatas which he reset from German to the Latin texts.
