This truly is the quartet with the golden touch. Packed houses, first prizes and five stars for every one of their recordings. The Doric String Quartet are best known for the classics. Their recent discs for Chandos focus on Schubert, Schumann, and Korngold, and their debut Haydn disc was marked out for Gramophone “Editor’s Choice”. These are the very composers they are bringing to NZ, four years after their enormously successful tour with Piers Lane. Formed in 1998, their career was launched by the 1st prize in the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and they are frequent guests at Wigmore Hall. They also have a strong commitment to contemporary music.
They are including ‘Eclipse’, a stunning quartet from Australian composer Brett Dean, winner of a number of international awards and focus of a recent 'Composer Portrait' from the Munich Philharmonic. But the heart of the programme is the classics: Haydn’s perfect Op 76, and Schubert’s epic D887, his last, and one of the most extraordinary things ever written.
