Registration Now Open for Playhouse on the Square's Fall Theatre Classes

Registration is open for Playhouse on the Square's Theatre School Program. Playhouse on the Square, Memphis' professional theatre, offers classes in acting, music and dance for people ages 5 through adult. Classes are held at the Jeanne and Henry Varnell Theatre Education building at 1711 Poplar. Classes begin September 21.

Theatre School classes are designed to provide a fun and challenging experience for both the beginner and the experienced performer. Taught by local theatre professionals, Playhouse on the Square's classes give students the opportunity to develop and expand their performance skills, including character development, movement, voice, and an awareness of proper audition practices. The session spans nine weeks, which includes eight weeks of classwork/rehearsal, and an informal showcase performance at The Circuit Playhouse for family and friends the ninth week.

Youth Classes - Saturdays

Ages 5 -7
Silly Stories - $120 This class uses music, art, dance, and drama to turn a picture book into a play.

Ages 7 - 11
Musical Theatre - $120 Explore musical theatre songs and learn how to develop a character while singing. We'll also learn the basics of proper singing technique.

Build-a Play - $120 Learn the elements of a play and put them to work by creating one.

Ages 12 -17
Musical Theatre - $150

Theatrical Dance - $120 We'll explore basic jazz dance techniques ranging from studio-based jazz to jazz for musical theatre, including the proper way to prepare and condition the body for dance.

Audition Techniques - $150 we'll explore the broader scope of acting while focusing on auditions. We'll work on cold readings and monologues as well as resumes and presentation.

Adult Classes - Mondays or Tuesdays

Basics for the Beginning Actor - $150

Advanced Acting - $150 This class is for people who have taken either several acting classes, performed in several plays, or both. Students can expect to dig into character analysis, physicality, and vocal production.

Tap Dancing for Non-Dancing Adults - $120 Just as the title states...no experience is required, though any experience is welcome. Jackie Nichols will teach you to tap.

Musical Theatre - $150 Students in this class will explore musical theatre songs, learn their singing ranges, and prepare musical theatre pieces for the showcase.
