Nineteen schools from across the mid-south will be a part of The Orpheum Theatre's first annual High School Musical Theatre Awards program. Modeled after the Tony awards, this program will recognize achievement in all areas of high school musical theatre programs in the region.
The only program of its kind in the tri-state area, The High School Musical Theatre Awards are open to all schools within 35 miles of Memphis. Orpheum adjudicators attend and evaluate musicals at each participating school, and nominations in 17 different categories will be announced in April, 2010. On May 27, 2010, students and supporters from all participating schools will gather at The Orpheum for the awards ceremony. Presented in grand scale with black tie presenters and professionally choreographed song and dance numbers, The Orpheum's High School Musical Theatre Awards will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the hundreds of students involved.The winners of the Best Actor and Best Actress awards at The Orpheum will advance to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City where they will compete will regional winners from other theatres across the country. The overall winners of that competition will be offered full scholarships to New York University's Tisch School for the Arts, a value of over $200,000.Videos
