Saturday, May 9, from 12:00 to 3:00 pm, Penobscot Theatre Company will offer guided tours of its historic home, the Bangor Opera House, at 131 Main Street, in Bangor; along with the off-site space it aims to transform into a "theatre factory," former Bangor Fire Station #6, at 14 Griffin Road in Bangor.

"We're fortunate to serve as steward of the last remaining opera house in Bangor, a community that was once home to seven such venues," said Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport. "The Bangor Opera House is a gem in the realm of theatres, a working hemp house, and if you don't know what that means, you need to take this tour!" Tours of the Bangor Opera House will begin in the lobby at 12:00, 1:00, and 2:00 pm on May 9; and last approximately 45 minutes. Participants should be prepared to stand throughout the duration and climb several flights of stairs. Included in the tour will be a summary of the building's history, explanations of the architectural and theatrical details, and insights into the behind-the-scenes workings of the space.

"Building tours help illustrate the full scope of our work," said Executive Director Mary Budd, "and to that end we're eager to showcase the Firehouse Project." On March 31, the company purchased former Bangor Fire Station #6 to house its scene shop, costume storage, and production apprentices. "Behind the scenes is a lot more activity than most folks realize from their vantage point in our audience! All of our shows are handcrafted. The sets and costumes are the product of professional designers and local craftspeople, and we desperately needed more space to make the magic!"

Renovations are underway and the theatre continues to seek donations to fund the $284,000 project. Tour participants will learn about the theatre's vision for the facility and the day-to-day responsibilities of the production team. Close-toed shoes are recommended.

Firehouse tours will start in the former truck bay on the half hour between 12:00 and 2:30 pm on May 9.

All tours are free but reservations are required. To participate, email tours@penobscottheatre.org or call (207) 942-3333 and indicate whether you would like to tour the Bangor Opera House, the Firehouse Project, or both; and your preferred start time(s).
