Fund for the Arts Now Accepting Nominations for 2016 Awards in the Arts

The Fund for the Arts encourages the Louisville community to make nominations for Louisville's inaugural Awards in the Arts, which will be presented at a VIP event inside the newly renovated Stakes Room at Churchill Downs, as part of Kentucky Derby Week's Opening Night presented by Stella Artois and Old Forester, taking place on Saturday, April 30.

The awards event will be hosted by the Fund for the Arts in partnership with the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation and Churchill Downs. Awards will recognize both individual artists and organizations from a variety of artistic disciplines, and may include visual artists, performers or craftsmen. The deadline for nominations and artists to submit proposals is Tuesday, March 1.

"We created the Awards in the Arts to celebrate Louisville's many accomplished artists and the positive impact of their work in our community," said Christen Boone, president and CEO, Fund for the Arts. "We look forward to local artists participating and seeing nominations for artists of all ages, backgrounds and artistic disciplines."

The Awards in the Arts will honor artists' talent and passion to create, produce and present transformative arts experiences in and for the community. Tickets to Awards in the Arts will be available beginning in early March via www.awardsinthearts.fundforthearts.org.

Individual awards will include:

  • Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award
  • Emerging Leader in the Arts Award
  • National Award in the Arts

Individual or organization awards will include:

  • Arts Impact Award
  • Arts Innovation Award
  • Arts Education Award

A cash award will be presented to the award recipients, at every level, except the National Award.

Any individual, business or organization may nominate artists for awards. Individuals or groups may submit multiple nominations, and those nominated may be considered for multiple categories. To make a nomination, nominators must complete the nomination form, which can be found at www.awardsinthearts.fundforthearts.org. This nomination form includes a one-page narrative to introduce the nominee and an explanation for the nomination. Digital links to samples of an artist's work or impact are encouraged. Completed nominations can be emailed to louisvillesartsawards@fundforthearts.org.

A selection committee, made up of artists, arts administrators and volunteer leaders in the arts, will review the nominations and select the award recipients.

Award winners will be notified by Friday, April 1 and receive tickets to the Inaugural Awards in the Arts VIP event on Saturday, April 30 at Churchill Downs.

Performing and visual artists are also encouraged to submit short proposals of interest in performing as a part of Opening Night at Churchill Downs.

There are three categories for artists (performers or organizations):

  • Large visual art installation and opening ceremony and performance
  • Medium scale performance and medium scale interactive art installation
  • Roving, costumed characters, pop-up performance and small scale interactive art installation

Interested artists should submit via email a one-page letter of interest, current resume, two to three professional references and examples of work by March 1, 2016 at 5 p.m. to Artist Coordinator, Mo McKnight Howe at mo@revelrygallery.com.
