A Class Act is a semi-autobiographical musical loosely based on the life of composer-lyricist Edward Kleban, who died at the age of 48 in 1987. Featuring a book by Linda Kline and Lonny Price along with music and lyrics by Kleban himself, the musical uses flashbacks and the device of time running backwards to retrace the high and low points of the composer's personal and professional life. Songwriter Ed Kleban’s friends gather at his memorial after his untimely death at the age of 48. Unbeknownst to them, Ed makes a surprise trip from “the beyond” to hear their loving tributes. Instead, he is shocked by their critical remarks. Determined to set the record straight, he shadows the speakers at the memorial as they relive scenes from his life, told with his own songs, including the showstopper “Better,” originally recorded by Barbra Streisand. The ensemble includes the legendary Lehman Engel, leader of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop; the uber-energetic composer Marvin Hamlisch, with whom we see Ed writing the lyrics for A Chorus Line’s iconic score; and the dynamic women in Ed’s life – sexy Mona, ambitious Felicia, lovely Lucy, and his first love, Sophie, who sings Ed’s modern romantic ballad “The Next Best Thing To Love.” Ed himself sings his extraordinary song “Self-Portrait,” which reveals the depth and humanity of one of musical theatre’s previously unsung masters.

August 02, 2021

That triple-threat talent named David Engel will once again grace the Musical Theatre West stage in FOREVER PLAID 30th ANNIVERSARY REUNION CONCERT beginning August 5th, but this time socially distancing at Blair Field near by. Since David originated the PLAID role of Smudge, he has performed on many a stage from Broadway to his home away from home Musical Theatre West. David managed to answer my queries while in the car on the way to his husband Larry Raben’s opening night of SCHOOL OF ROCK he directed at Tuacahn Center for the Arts in Ivins, Utah.

Actress/singer/vocal coach Susan Edwards Martin, Lady Blues in Torch Song Trilogy on Broadway and star of many other musical shows, recently premiered her solo cabaret show at Upstairs at Vitello's. I reviewed the show and she was sensational.* She is taking the show to Feinstein's 54/Below in New York on March 23. Edwards Martin also has created an original show about the optimistic way she lives her life called, 'Unlimited! You'll Have the Time of Her Life!", that had a spectacular one night presentation and is currently waiting in the wings for a full production. Busy, busy, busy, Edwards also recently performed with Musical Theatre Guild as the lead in Minnie's Boys to rave reviews. Ms. Edwards Martin sat down and discussed her career thus far, and about the story behind Unlimited! You'll Have the Time of Her Life! and her latest cabaret show. Before we start to look back I always ask a few less relevant questions about musical theatre.
