Cameri Theatre presents THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE, September 17 and October 18.

Following a local insurrection, during which the Governor is murdered, his wife flees the flaming city, not forgetting to take her finest gowns with her, but in her haste abandons her infant son. Grusha, a kitchen maid, is left with the forsaken child and, strapping him to her back, she sets out on a grueling and perilous journey on foot in search of food and shelter for him. Several years later, peace has been restored to the land and Grusha is married (unwillingly, in order to provide a name for the child she has adopted and roof over his head). She is summoned to the capital to stand trial, where she faces the child's biological mother who has been searching for him for some time and is claiming him and the millions he is to inherit, for herself.

Fortunately for Grusha, the judge hearing the case is the picturesque Azdak, a jester in rags, who was appointed to the bench as a joke during the rebellion. Azdek, who is partial to the bottle, prefers resting his buttocks on law books rather than reading them, and openly takes bribes, holds a trial resembling a kind of Judgment of Solomon between the two women...
