Indian music tradition is replete with varied genres, each having its own idiom, character and aesthetics. Consequently, each genre demands a special training, and musicians strive to master multiple genres and thus expand their repertoire.
Patiala gharana, to which both Ajoy Chakrabarty and his daughter/disciple Kaushiki belong, is known for its penchant for classical and semi-classical genres such as khayal, tarana, thumri and dadra. Carrying forth the tradition of the gharana, the father and daughter/disciple will present, individually and together, traditional compositions in these genres.
