The story of the man who stalked the sidelines springs to life in College of the Mainland Community Theatre's "Lombardi," running March 27 to April 13. Based on the biography "When Pride Still Mattered" by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss, the play traces the legendary coach's life and career and explores the mysteries within.

How did Lombardi transform a team that had been losing for a decade into five-time champions? How did he develop his forceful, no-holds-barred style? With a remarkable record of winning five championships in seven years, including the first two Super Bowls, Lombardi is approached by a rookie reporter attempting to answer these questions in his profile of the profoundly successful enigma.

As he shadows the coach, the reporter gets a closer look at Lombardi's rationale and relationships with his family and his players. A blend of humor and drama, the play depicts the former teacher's legacy and lessons that apply to all who strive to inspire greatness in others.

"When you think about football, you think of Vince Lombardi. A colorful guy, he believed in discipline, faith and winning. He yelled, he screamed, but he adored his players," said director Rob de los Reyes. "The play discusses how he could get people to do things and do them well. It translates to all areas."

Football fans and drama enthusiasts alike will enjoy "Lombardi," a piercing look at the man, his methods and his motivation.

The play stars Nelson Heggen, of Houston; Jack Ivy, of Sugarland; Zona Jane Meyer, of Missouri City; Rick Evans, of League City; Shane Manning, of Spring; Javian Mitchell, of Friendswood; and COM student Matt Graves, of League City.
