New Improvisation Workshop Offered at Kumu Kahua Theatre

Monica and Squire Coldwell have been studying and performing improvisation for decades; they have studied with over two dozen visiting instructors and created improvisation long-forms (improvised shows generally more than 20 minutes long, as compared to short-form sketches of a few minutes). They have performed at improvisation festivals, both locally and nationally, as well as on the mainstage at the Chicago Improv Festival. They also founded Hawaii's first and only non-profit improvisation organization ImprovEd Hawaii. They have taught teachers, actors, students of all ages, and fellow improvisers skills including, building self-confidence, creating collaborations, curriculum, improvised plays and theatre skills.

Using Improv Staging for Character Development

Get ready to stretch your mind and body in this workshop.

In this workshop we will spend four weeks honing skills behind performance and its importance for relationship and character development while working on our feet. By focusing on space work and staging, we will explore the concepts of identifying with and developing characters, using movement to express yourself, and much more. We will lend instruction and lead participants through movement-based improv exercises and activities. Please dress ready to move, bring water, and have fun exploring.

Squire Coldwell

Along with his improv experience, Squire has danced professionally with Honolulu Dance Theatre, Tau Dance Theatre and Iona Dance Company. He has been a technician for Kumu Kahua Theatre, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Hawaii Theatre, and the Hawaii Convention Center. He has experience in designing props, sets, sound, and costumes for Kumu Kahua Theatre, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Mid Pacific School of Arts, and Kamehameha Schools. And finally as a professional actor he has worked for the Sex Abuse Treatment Center, Kalihi-Palama Health Center, and Honolulu Theatre for Youth.

Monica Coldwell

Along with improv, Monica has focused on her theatrical work, graduating with a Bachelor's in Theatre and Dance from UH-Manoa. She has served as an Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Technician, Tour Manager, Box Office Assistant, Prop and Costume Designer, and Company Actor for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth. She also worked as an actress for the Sex Abuse Treatment Center and Kalihi-Palama Health Center and spent over ten years making her living in Hawaii as a professional theatre artist.
