HTY is excited to begin their 2017-2018 season with a play created by HTY company member Alvin Chan. Chan's original retelling of the ultimate "girl-power" story, The Ballad of Mu Lan mixes traditional Chinese theatrical techniques with original music for a new take on a classic story! Not since Chan's Five Chinese Brothers has HTY incorporated this level of acrobatic athleticism, training and live music into a single production.

The Ballad of Mu Lan opens Friday August 25 at 7:00 PM at Tenney Theatre. Audience members are invited to the Opening Night Reception in the Von Holt Room immediately following the show, where they can enjoy pupus and refreshments while rubbing shoulders with the show's cast and crew. Performances continue Saturdays, August 26 - September 30 at 4:30 PM, a Sensory Friendly performance Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 AM, and an Onstage Workshop Saturday September 9 at 2:30 PM.

"The Power of People" is the theme of the 2017-2018 season at Honolulu Theatre for Youth. Artistic Director Eric Johnson says, "This production of The Ballad of Mu Lan is the perfect start to a season dedicated to stories that celebrate people's potential. Alvin has written a version of this story that emphasizes teamwork, resilience and our ability to change traditions when they are harmful. With lots of humor and plenty of action, performed with elaborate costumes and sets this piece is a great introduction to HTY and a chance for families to enjoy time together."

Season tickets for the entire eight-play season are $120 for adults (age 19-59), $65 for youth (18 and under) and $95 for seniors (60+), and are on sale now. A Pick Six package is also available. Single tickets are $20, $10, and $15, respectively. HTY is a Blue Star Theatre.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth's Tenney Theatre is located at 229 Queen Emma Square on the grounds of The Cathedral of St. Andrew. For more information, to receive a season brochure, order tickets or learn more about HTY's educational programing call 808-839-9885 or visit www.htyweb.org.
