Hawaii Symphony Orchestra to Pay Tribute to Judy Garland

The Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) will take concertgoers Over The Rainbow and beyond on Friday, March 18 at 7:30 pm at A Tribute to Judy Garland featuring acclaimed vocalist and recording artist Hilary Kole. A Tribute to Judy Garland celebrates the timeless wonder of music made famous by Garland - the singer Fred Astaire called "the greatest entertainer that ever lived." Tickets start from $27 and are on sale now.
Led by Maestro Phil Snedecor, this night of unforgettable music with the HSO features Garland's most beloved songs, including Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, as well as chart-toppers such as Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart, Stompin' at the Savoy, Get Happy, You Made Me Love You, Look for the Silver Lining, and The Man that Got Away. Concertgoers can look forward to standards such as The Trolley Song and The Boy Next Door, written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane for the 1944 blockbuster Meet Me in St. Louis, as well as Garland classics such as As Long as He Needs Me from the musical film Oliver!, which Garland recorded and performed on her television series, The Judy Garland Show. Highlights from this tribute to Garland's legacy also include songs from films such as A Star is Born and The Wizard of Oz.
At A Tribute to Judy Garland with Hilary Kole and the HSO, concertgoers will experience the American songbook as defined by one of the most singular talents of the 20th century. Garland - an Academy Award-winning actor, Grammy Award-winning recording artist and gifted performer - was a true star of Hollywood's Golden Era. This tribute of Garland's legacy was developed by Kole and Snedecor to honor her legacy and has received rave reviews across the country.
About Hilary Kole: Hailed by critics as a "musical marvel!" (Rex Reed, NY Observer), Hilary Kole continues to engage audiences throughout the world since beginning her professional career at the legendary Rainbow Room as the youngest singer ever to grace that stage. She has appeared to sold-out audiences at the famed Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, at Lincoln Center as part of the "American Songbook Series" with Jonathan Schwartz, and at Carnegie Hall for the tribute to Oscar Peterson alongside Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock and Nancy Wilson. Kole has had the privilege of being the last singer to record with Oscar Peterson, and the first singer since Ella Fitzgerald to record a duet with that jazz legend.
Additional major international appearances have included repeat performances at Blue Note Tokyo, the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Umbria Jazz Festival, as well as appearing with orchestras throughout America, including the New York Pops, Colorado Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, and others. In addition to her recordings with Oscar Peterson, Kole has also recorded with music legends Dave Brubeck, Hank Jones, Michel LeGrand, Mulgrew Miller, David Frishberg, Monty Alexander, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, John Pizzarelli, and Mike Renzi, among others.
About Phil Snedecor: Maestro Phil Snedecor is on the faculty at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, and George Mason University in Virginia, and has written a series of brass etude books that are required repertoire at many colleges and conservatories. His arrangements and compositions have been performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. In 2012, he founded the DC Pops Orchestra, a 30-piece ensemble featuring some of the best jazz and crossover artists in the region. In 1993, Snedecor and National Symphony Principal Trombonist Milton Stevens co-founded The Washington Symphonic Brass, a 17-piece professional brass ensemble. They perform regularly for the Washington National Cathedral, St. Matthew's Cathedral, the Basilica at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and with the Washington Choral Arts Society at the Kennedy Center. In addition, Snedecor has performed in the touring productions of Guys & Dolls, Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Evita and West Side Story. He has recorded under the RCA, CBS, Gothic, Koss, and Summit labels.
Snedecor attended the Eastman School of Music, where he received the prestigious Performers Certificate and was a member of the premiere brass quintet, the Canterbury Brass. While earning his degrees in trumpet performance and literature, he also studied arranging and composition with Professor Rayburn Wright, formerly arranger for Radio City Music Hall. Snedecor is a former member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and has held one-year positions with the National Symphony, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and the Baltimore Opera. He is Principal Trumpet in the Harrisburg (PA) Symphony Orchestra and former Co-Principal Trumpet in the Concert Artists of Baltimore.
Tickets: Tickets range from $27-$79 and are available at the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra Box Office by calling (808) 94-MUSIC - (808) 946-8742 from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. HSO advance sales end at noon on Thursday, March 17, but are available through the Blaisdell Box Office until concert time.
