Maria Johansdotter is a bold woman who does whatever it takes in order to live as an independent person and musician. She listens to her heart and proudly bears the consequences of her actions. When the judge asks her whether she is a man or a woman, Maria replies that she is both, but more a man.

Today – more than 300 years later – the curious history of Maria Johansdotter / Magnus Johansson deserves to be told. The story begins in the island village of Föglö on Åland in the late 17th century and ends in Stockholm a few decades later.
